The Shift Leader role at Potbelly is a dynamic leadership position within the operations department, responsible for managing shifts and ensuring both product quality and customer service exceed expectations. This nonexempt position reports directly to a General Manager or Assistant Manager and requires strong hands-on leadership, organizational, and communication skills. The Shift Leader plays a pivotal role in the daily operations of the shop, from leading and developing team members to managing sales and controlling costs. They foster a positive work atmosphere while upholding Potbelly’s standards for food safety, personnel policies, and customer service.

This position offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $22 to $22.57, plus tips, based on skills and qualifications. The Shift Leader ensures smooth operation of shifts by delegating tasks, handling customer concerns, and maintaining high standards for cleanliness and safety. Candidates must be capable of standing and walking for extended periods, lifting items up to 50 pounds, and thriving in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Ideal candidates have at least one year of supervisory experience in a restaurant or retail setting and hold a high school diploma. Food Safety Certification is mandatory, with certification requirements varying by state. Exceptional customer service and communication skills, strong organizational and interpersonal capabilities, plus leadership and team-building abilities are must-haves for success. The position demands a minimum commitment of 40 hours per week, including working a minimum of two opening or closing shifts.

Job Requirements

  • High school degree
  • minimum of 1 year supervisory experience in a restaurant or retail environment
  • food safety certification
  • ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week including 2 opening or closing shifts
  • ability to stand walk for 8-9 hours and sit for 1-2 hours per day
  • ability to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • ability to work in warm and cool indoor environments and occasionally outdoors
  • ability to tolerate noise and allergens such as peanut products egg dairy gluten soy seafood and shellfish
  • strong leadership and organizational skills
  • ability to communicate clearly in English

Job Duties

  • Lead associates on shifts including assigning tasks cleaning line duties opening closing duties providing feedback and training
  • know and support appropriate personnel policies labor laws and safety procedures
  • ensure all security procedures are executed safe procedures open close procedures etc
  • transition into opening closing duties
  • make customers really happy
  • resolve customer complaints issues
  • empower associates to make sure all customers leave happy
  • execute and support all food safety requirements and practices
  • lead associates to open transition and close shifts without supervision
  • manage and organize the line and delegate duties to associates
  • know and uphold standards for product quality
  • work the line as needed
  • ensure back-of-the-house procedural standards are met
  • promote sales on the shift through executing the marketing plan within the four walls
  • control food costs labor waste and cash on the shift
  • count drawers and follow proper daily cash handling procedures
