Job Description
The Restaurant General Manager (RGM) position is a vital leadership role within a dynamic and fast-paced restaurant environment. This position serves as the executive leader for a single restaurant, with comprehensive responsibility for profitability, guest satisfaction, team development, and day-to-day operations. The RGM works under the supervision of a District Manager and directly oversees a diverse team ranging from an Assistant Manager to Hourly Shift Coordinators and general Team Members, typically comprising 20 to 45 employees. This leadership role is integral in ensuring the seamless operation of the restaurant, driving both financial success and an exceptional guest experience.
As a part of a well-established restaurant company, the RGM is entrusted with the critical task of managing the restaurant's Profit and Loss statement (P&L), striving to achieve and exceed targeted financial outcomes through astute operational oversight and strategic decision-making. The manager plays a pivotal role in analyzing and reviewing key P&L components, identifying areas for improvement and driving initiatives that boost restaurant profitability. By fostering a culture of proactive sales generation, excellent guest service, and rigorous people management, the RGM helps shape a thriving business that consistently meets operational goals.
In addition to financial stewardship, the RGM focuses heavily on the guest experience, recognizing that exceptional service is fundamental to the restaurant's ongoing success. This includes motivating the team to deliver friendly, efficient, and accurate service within a clean and welcoming environment. Addressing and resolving guest issues promptly is a top priority, ensuring that customer satisfaction remains at the forefront of operations. The RGM also leverages guest feedback systems to identify root causes of any service or operational shortcomings, crafting action plans to elevate the overall guest experience. Furthermore, an important aspect of the role is community engagement, where the RGM interacts with local groups and customers to build relationships and implement tailored marketing and promotional initiatives that attract new visitors and build loyalty.
People management constitutes a core element of this role. The RGM leads recruitment, selection, and onboarding processes, aiming to build and sustain a high-performing team. Through comprehensive training and certification programs, new Team Members are equipped to meet the standards and expectations of the restaurant. The manager also implements recognition programs to inspire and reward excellence, alongside providing constructive coaching and feedback to foster continual individual and team development. Effective leadership within this domain directly contributes to improving the restaurant's operational performance and team morale.
Operational excellence is another key responsibility. The RGM oversees labor management by optimizing manager staffing and team member scheduling to align with business needs efficiently. The role requires strict enforcement of compliance with all relevant government regulations, employment laws, and company policies to ensure a secure and lawful workplace. The RGM ensures that all brand and operational standards are consistently upheld, thereby maintaining the restaurant’s reputation for quality and service. Additionally, the role demands flexibility to perform duties typically assigned to the Assistant Manager and Hourly Shift Coordinators as necessary, demonstrating a hands-on leadership style.
This position requires a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office and email communications, a strong understanding of P&L management, and proven leadership capabilities alongside guest service principles. The work schedule necessitates availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays, including the ability to work long or irregular shifts to support the restaurant's operational demands. Candidates typically have a high school diploma or GED, with some college preferred, plus 1 to 2 years of prior restaurant management experience. A successful RGM is characterized by strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks effectively, and a passionate commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences and leading teams to success.
