The position available is a PRN Respiratory Therapist role within the Respiratory Therapy department, working primarily night shifts from 7 PM to 7 AM with 1 to 2 twelve-hour shifts per week. This role plays a vital role in the hospital’s respiratory care services, focusing on evaluating and treating respiratory therapy patients with prescribed therapeutic interventions. This is a dynamic position that requires constant vigilance, careful assessment, and the implementation of individualized care plans based on patient diagnoses. The therapist will monitor patient progress, operate advanced respiratory care equipment, and ensure treatments align with physician orders and departmental protocols. Since this is a PRN role, it provides some scheduling flexibility while offering opportunities for shift differentials for night, weekend, and additional shifts worked.
The Respiratory Therapist will also educate patients and families about respiratory conditions, helping to improve patient understanding and engagement in their own care. Job Requirements
- associate's degree in respiratory care or equivalent years of education and experience
- no prior experience required
- ability to use speech for oral communication
- ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- capability to lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing 0-25 lbs frequently
- frequent sitting, reaching, and data entry tasks
- good vision for near and far distances and color distinction
- frequent use of smell and hearing to detect odors and sounds
- occasional lifting of heavier objects (25-50 lbs) and moving patients
- occasional physical activities such as bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping, and repetitive limb movements
- occasional driving
- ability to perform rare crawling and running
- possession of professional licenses and certifications appropriate to the work location, including BLS HCP, RRT, and state respiratory care practitioner registration
Job Qualifications
- associate's degree in respiratory care or equivalent education and experience
- basic life support healthcare provider (BLS HCP) certification from the American Heart Association
- registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care
- respiratory care practitioner registration or permit as required by the state of work location
- strong communication and patient education skills
- ability to operate and maintain respiratory therapy equipment
Job Duties
- assess patient for appropriate type and frequency of treatment and develop a plan of care based on diagnosis
- provide respiratory care services according to physician's orders, department policies, and procedures
- implement and monitor patient care plan and equipment, record and communicate patient condition, and perform advanced respiratory care modalities
- evaluate respiratory practice, administration of medications, and treatment based on patient outcome
- educate the patient and family about health condition and community resources
- assist with care, calibration, and maintenance of all equipment, maintain departmental inventory, and process equipment following cleaning and sterilization procedures
- respond to medical emergencies and rapid responses
- work in a constant state of alertness and maintain safety
- perform other duties as assigned
