Job Description

The Respiratory Care Department at OHSU plays a critical role in delivering diagnostic and therapeutic care to patients of all ages who experience respiratory impairments. This department offers 24/7 consultation services to the OHSU community, ensuring expert and timely respiratory care to meet the needs of a wide range of patients, including adults and children.
We are currently seeking dedicated Respiratory Care Practitioners to join our team in both Adult and Pediatric care settings. These practitioners provide specialized respiratory care interventions and diagnostic testing as ordered by physicians, catering to patients with pulmonary disorders such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, or conditions resulting from heart attacks, trauma, or prematurity in newborns. Respiratory therapists at OHSU perform numerous diagnostic procedures, such as blood gas analysis and pulmonary function tests, and therapeutic interventions like operating mechanical ventilators, administering medications, and facilitating airway clearance treatments.
This full-time position offers a 3x12 hour shift schedule, including opportunities for night shifts that provide differential pay. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates. The work involves functioning in sometimes noisy patient care areas with potential exposure to blood, body fluids, airborne pathogens, magnetic fields, and radiation. OHSU Respiratory Care Practitioners emphasize teamwork, often assisting colleagues and health professionals, while also contributing to the training of new respiratory therapists, students, and other healthcare team members. The role demands an understanding of current and emerging care modalities and equipment, with responsibilities extending to newborn resuscitation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and adherence to family-centered care, particularly within the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital program.

Job Requirements
- A current valid Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner s LRCP credential issued by the Health Licensing Office for the State of Oregon
- Registered Respiratory Therapist RRT credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care upon hire
- Minimum of an associate degree from an accredited respiratory therapy program
- Basic Life Support BLS certification for Healthcare Providers issued by the American Heart Association
- For PANDA unit positions three years Pediatric Intensive Care and or Neonatal Intensive Care experience
- Completion of ALCS NRP or PALS certification within six months of hire for some positions as indicated
- Ability to work 3x12 hour shifts including night shifts and weekends
- Willingness to work in sometimes noisy patient care areas with exposure risks
- Commitment to teamwork and ongoing professional development
Job Qualifications
- A valid Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner credential issued by the Health Licensing Office for the State of Oregon and Registered Respiratory Therapist credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care upon hire
- Minimum of an associate degree from a respiratory therapy education program supported or accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care
- Basic Life Support certification for Healthcare Providers issued by the American Heart Association
- For positions in the PANDA unit, three years Pediatric Intensive Care and/neonatal Intensive Care experience required
- Some positions require ALCS NRP or PALS certification within six months of hire as indicated
- Bachelor degree preferred
- Two years of clinical respiratory care preferred
- Adult Critical Care Specialty credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care preferred
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics preferred
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support issued by the American Heart Association preferred
Job Duties
- Provides therapeutic interventions including airway management therapeutic gases and ventilator management newborn resuscitation cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Performs diagnostic procedures including sampling of arterial blood bedside spirometry spontaneous ventilatory parameters point of care testing
- Applies therapeutic modalities and communication approaches tailored to age specific needs of the patient including Doernbecher Children s Hospital Family Centered Care Program
- Assists other Respiratory Care Practitioners and health professionals to provide quality patient care and trains new Respiratory Therapists students and healthcare team members
- Demonstrates understanding of current and new care modalities and equipment
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by manager supervisor or lead worker
