Job Description
Houston Area Women27s Center (HAWC) is a distinguished non-profit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence. HAWC fosters a dynamic, inclusive, and empowering work environment where employees contribute meaningfully to a vital mission that impacts the lives of many in the Houston community. Committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the organization continuously challenges itself to build a culture where every voice is heard and respected. Employees at HAWC experience fulfillment as they play a vital role in supporting survivors, affording the chance to make a difference daily.
The opportunity of being a Residential Cook at HAWC offers a rewarding experience within a fast-paced, fun environment alongside a passionate and dynamic team. As a Residential Cook, you will be responsible for preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning to ensure efficient and sanitary kitchen operations. In this role, you will prepare and serve a minimum of 125 meals daily to clients residing at the Flagship Campus, strictly following approved menus and dietary restrictions to accommodate cultural and medical needs. Your efforts ensure the delivery of quality meals adhering to enterprise, city, state, and federal food safety and health standards, including compliance with the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) regulations.
The schedule is set from Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with occasional local travel to off-site locations, requiring reliable transportation. The hourly wage starts at $17.02, with semi-monthly pay periods. HAWC offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; 401K with employer matching contributions; generous paid time off comprising 11 holidays, 3 personal holidays, 15 vacation days per year, and approximately 7 hours of sick leave accrued monthly; company-paid life and long-term disability insurance; and an employee assistance program.
In this role, you will monitor food inventories and document according to donor guidelines such as the Houston Food Bank, prepare three meals daily for clients on-site, and manage meal preparations for clients off-campus by preparing sack lunches. You will handle donated and purchased food items responsibly, inspecting and rejecting damaged products. Kitchen sanitation and safety are paramount, and you are expected to maintain strict hygiene and cleanliness standards for yourself and the kitchen equipment. You will also perform daily logging of refrigerator and freezer temperatures to ensure food safety.
This position requires food management certification and is preferred to have culinary certification as well. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Excel, and Teams is necessary to manage communications and documentation effectively. A valid Texas driver27s license with good driving record and reliable transportation is required, including the ability to travel locally as needed.
Overall, as a Residential Cook at Houston Area Women27s Center, your contributions will impact not only the well-being of survivors but also the broader community by supporting organization operations that strive to end domestic and sexual violence for all. This role suits individuals who are skilled in food preparation, adept at adhering to safety and sanitation protocols, organized, and motivated to collaborate in a meaningful cause and a team-oriented workplace.
