This role is essential in managing and overseeing the development and operations of residential life programs within residence halls or apartment communities. The University of Washington is a renowned and reputable institution recognized globally for its commitment to education, research, and public service. Within its vibrant campus life, Housing & Food Services plays a critical role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging living environment for thousands of students. This position is integral to maintaining an environment that supports student success, wellness, and community engagement.
The Resident Director serves as a key leader within the residential community, supervising and supporting student leaders while managing operational aspects of the housing environment. This is a live-in position, requiring the Resident Director to reside on campus in University Housing, underscoring the importance of being accessible and engaged with the residents. The role includes supervising a team of resident advisers, office assistants, and assistant resident directors in a community that can range from 300 to 1000 residents or more. In larger communities, a co-Resident Director model is used to share supervision responsibilities.
Key responsibilities involve direct supervision, training, and evaluating student leadership teams, facilitating programming and community development based on established models, and ensuring effective crisis management and student conduct oversight. The Resident Director is also responsible for managing building operations in collaboration with various service departments including custodial, maintenance, and dining services. Budget management and operational oversight are critical components, with responsibility for managing budgets upwards of $450,000.
Additionally, the role requires active participation in emergency on-call rotations to respond to incidents affecting the residential population and applying diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) principles in daily operations and crisis responses. The position demands a commitment to creating an inclusive living community, enhancing student engagement and development, enforcing university policies, and supporting the university's mission and values.
This role offers a competitive annual salary of $48,564, along with university-provided benefits and the unique advantage of on-campus housing. The University of Washington is committed to providing a supportive work environment characterized by diversity, intellectual vitality, and opportunities for professional growth. By joining the Housing & Food Services team, the Resident Director becomes a vital part of a dedicated effort to enhance student life and foster an inclusive community where all students can thrive. This is a full-time, regular employment opportunity requiring alternate work shifts including significant evening and weekend responsibilities.
The University of Washington values inclusive and respectful workplaces and encourages applications from all qualified individuals regardless of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, and other protected statuses. Accessibility accommodations are available upon request to ensure all candidates have an equitable opportunity throughout the application and employment process.
