Job Description
CFH is a shelter organization operating under contract with the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS). As a vital contract agency, CFH has critical reporting duties to DHS and is also subject to stringent inspections and audits by the DHS, the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, and the Coalition for the Homeless of New York City. The shelter provides safety, support, and essential services to vulnerable populations, particularly individuals experiencing homelessness. With a mission centered around offering a safe and supportive living environment, CFH strives to foster dignity and respect among its residents while facilitating their pathway to stability and self-sufficiency.
CFH is currently seeking a Residence Worker/Food Service Worker to join their shelter team. This pivotal role operates directly under the supervision of the Shelter Director or designee. The Residence Worker/Food Service Worker position is essential to maintaining the health, security, and well-being of the shelter residents and the general operation of the shelter facility. This role demands exceptional customer service skills alongside effective communication abilities to interact with clients and staff effectively.
The Residence Worker/Food Service Worker fulfills a critical role as part of the facility’s safety team, tasked with maintaining the safety and security of clients by overseeing strategic posts throughout the building. Individuals in this position are responsible for conducting safety rounds and ensuring strict enforcement of facility rules and regulations. Additionally, this role involves responding promptly and appropriately to client emergencies, including intervening during physical or verbal altercations and managing medical emergencies with skills that may include performing CPR.
Moreover, the role entails managing operational procedures to ensure compliance with all government regulations. This includes client monitoring tasks such as verifying resident arrivals and departures, maintaining accurate client and bed counts, managing curfew adherence, and ensuring accurate documentation and reporting of incidents. The worker also manages client supplies inventory and is responsible for the preparation, distribution, and service of meals. A keen understanding of health regulations and safety codes related to food service is vital, alongside maintaining cleanliness and organization of the dining and food preparation areas.
The Residence Worker/Food Service Worker also undertakes facility maintenance work—ensuring kitchens, cafeterias, and storage spaces are clean, organized, and well-stocked through accurate inventory management and timely reporting. Additionally, this role supports staff development through participation in ongoing trainings, including those mandated by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) and DHS.
Beyond these operational duties, the role involves direct client interaction such as registering new clients, orienting them to facility policies, facilitating vacancy control, and assisting clients in complying with facility rules within common areas like recreational rooms and laundry facilities. Part of the responsibilities also include helping clients with medication reminders where applicable, managing the property of absent clients, and escorting residents to appointments related to public assistance or medical care.
This position is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of homeless or special needs populations, offering both the challenge and fulfillment of working in a dynamic support environment. It requires a dependable, communicative, and compassionate individual dedicated to the mission of CFH and the safety and well-being of its residents.
