The role of Registered Professional Dialysis Nurse at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - San Marcos is pivotal in ensuring patients with kidney-related health challenges receive superior and safe treatment. This full-time position, with work hours from 7 AM to 7 PM, involves providing expert dialysis nursing care through all phases of treatment — from pre-assessment to post-treatment evaluation. The nurse is responsible for developing and implementing personalized care plans tailored to each patient’s unique health requirements. Duties extend beyond patient care to include the effective operation and management of dialysis equipment and supplies, ensuring adherence to hospital policies for safety and resource optimization. This role requires clinical excellence coupled with resource stewardship to support sustainable and high-quality dialysis care. Essential to the position is precise documentation of patient outcomes and resource use in medical records, thereby supporting not only clinical care but also administrative and billing accuracy. Job Requirements

Associate’s degree in nursing required
RN license in the state of employment or compact required
BLS required
1 year of dialysis experience preferred
1 year of acute clinical experience as a registered nurse preferred
ACLS required for adult dialysis nursing staff only
PALS required for pediatric dialysis nursing staff only
Demonstrate excellent clinical skills and patient care
Ability to follow organizational policies and procedures
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Commitment to accurate documentation and resource stewardship

Job Qualifications

Associate’s degree in nursing
Bachelor’s degree in science in nursing (BSN) preferred
RN license in the state of employment or compact
BLS certification
ACLS certification for adult dialysis nursing staff
PALS certification for pediatric dialysis nursing staff
1 year of dialysis experience preferred
1 year of acute clinical experience as a registered nurse preferred
Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Critical Care Unit (CCU), Emergency Room (ER), or Medical Surgical (Med Surg) experience preferred
Clinical patient care experience in a relevant setting preferred

Job Duties

Demonstrates appropriate hand hygiene, use of PPE, and facility hygiene, including cleaning and disinfection of work surfaces and equipment—pre-treatment, intra-treatment, and post-treatment
Operates all available dialysis equipment and supplies based on safety, effectiveness, and cost in accordance with organizational policy to provide expected patient outcomes
Follows policy and procedure in performance of water treatment procedures and testing
Provides documented pre- and post-dialysis nursing assessments that include but are not limited to: patient weight and fluid removal calculations, lung sounds and presence of edema, vital signs, review of current labs, and assessment and care of the dialysis access
Obtains pre- and post-dialysis lab specimens per physician order and organizational policy
Initiates, monitors, and terminates each dialysis treatment per organizational policy and procedure
Follows organizational policy and procedure in response to dialysis-related complications, emergencies, and technical issues
Follows organizational policy and procedure in the administration of all medications during dialysis, including as-needed (PRN) medications, blood and blood products, and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs)
Ensures patients are transported in a timely manner to and from dialysis treatments to minimize delays in care and maintain treatment schedules
Participates in the development and implementation of an individualized plan of care for each patient
Verifies the safety of each dialysis treatment by performing and documenting required equipment safety checks, including acid and bicarb expiration dates and chlorine/chloramine testing before every treatment and Minncare residual testing as needed
Responsible for accurately entering charges for each patient they provide care for, ensuring timely and complete documentation of billable services in accordance with departmental procedures
Manages time so that workflow is efficient and consistent
Perform other duties as assigned
