Job Description

The Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department manages about 450 acres of parkland, which includes community and historic parks, senior services, playgrounds, aquatic centers, tennis courts, multi-use fields, and almost 40 linear miles of recreational trails. This department plays a key role in maintaining the city’s commitment to green spaces and community wellness. Within this context, the Senior Recreation Leader position represents the highest level in the Recreation Leader job family. This part-time, non-benefitted role requires specialist knowledge in managing high-volume recreation programs and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Candidates must have proven experience coordinating complex events and programs, particularly those tailored to seniors, as the role is based at the Carlsbad Senior Center. Flexibility is essential, with required availability for Saturday morning shifts and a maximum of 980 hours worked per fiscal year.

In this position, the Senior Recreation Leader is responsible for overseeing rental activities, including managing guidelines and scheduling, performing facility setups and tear-downs, and developing standard operating procedures and training materials for facility staff. The role demands constant interaction with the public, requiring strong customer service skills, especially in working with seniors. The Senior Recreation Leader also handles program information input in the city’s registration system, assists with customer service inquiries, processes refunds and transfers, monitors program attendance trends and customer feedback, and prepares detailed reports and contracts. Leadership abilities are essential as the role involves supervising staff and ensuring that program goals are met effectively. This role is dynamic and collaborative, offering opportunities for a motivated individual to contribute meaningfully to the community’s recreational offerings and the overall quality of life for Carlsbad residents.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least 1 year of experience performing duties comparable to a Senior Recreation Leader
  • Experience working with the public
  • Must have a valid California Class C driver’s license
  • Flexible availability including required Saturday morning shifts
  • Part-time status cannot exceed 980 total hours worked within one fiscal year

Job Duties

  • Oversee internal and external rentals including guidelines procedures and scheduling
  • Perform facility setups and tear-downs for programs and events
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and training documents for facility staff
  • Input and maintain program information in the City of Carlsbad registration website
  • Assist customers with registration refunds transfers and general inquiries
  • Monitor trends through attendance data and customer survey responses
  • Assist in the preparation of reports contracts data entry and management of sensitive information
  • Ensure program goals and objectives are met personally through team members or by supervising staff
