Job Description
The City of Avondale, located in Arizona, is a vibrant municipality dedicated to enriching the lives of its residents through a diverse range of community services and programs. The city's Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department plays a central role in this mission by providing exceptional recreational opportunities, educational programs, and special events that foster community engagement, wellness, and personal growth. With a strong commitment to creating inclusive and accessible programs for all age groups, the department continually strives to enhance the quality of life in Avondale by promoting active lifestyles, social connections, and lifelong learning.
Currently, the City of Avondale is accepting applications for the position of Recreation Programmer (Special Events) within the Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department. This full-time role is vital to the planning, organizing, and implementation of a variety of youth camps, teen activities, community special events, and recreational programs that inspire learning, creativity, teamwork, and community involvement. The position offers an excellent opportunity for candidates passionate about community recreation and events management to contribute meaningfully to the city's vibrant cultural landscape.
The Recreation Programmer is responsible for coordinating the recreational activities offered by the City of Avondale, including the development of innovative program curricula and the supervision of programming sessions. This role requires close collaboration with various stakeholders, including vendors, volunteers, city staff, and the general public, to ensure smooth execution and high-quality experiences for participants. Responsibilities also include managing event logistics such as setup, teardown, vendor coordination, and on-site operations, along with developing detailed event timelines, run-of-show documents, and comprehensive post-event wrap-up reports.
In addition to program management, the Recreation Programmer plays a key role in maintaining a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for all participants by overseeing staff training and guidance. The position demands strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills, as well as the ability to evaluate program outcomes and work within budget constraints. Administrative duties, including processing inquiries, managing rentals, supporting marketing efforts through social media campaigns, website updates, flyer creation, and email blasts are integral components of the job.
The ideal candidate will bring creativity, a customer-service mindset, and a proactive approach to community recreation and special events programming. A background in recreation or public administration, combined with experience in program planning and execution, will set candidates apart. This role offers the potential for professional growth within a dynamic municipal department that values innovation, teamwork, and community impact. The City of Avondale is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce and encourages all qualified individuals to apply. The position will remain open until filled, with the first review of applications scheduled for June 29, 2026, and weekly reviews thereafter.
