Job Description

Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA) stands as the world’s largest network of privately owned campgrounds and the leading name in outdoor hospitality. With over 500 locations across the United States and Canada, KOA offers a mix of franchised and company-owned parks, fostering a welcoming environment for guests who seek memorable outdoor experiences. Established in 1962, KOA's mission centers on "connecting people to the outdoors and each other." Those affiliated with the KOA brand uphold core values such as being family-oriented, passionate, entrepreneurial, customer-focused, and innovative.

KOA is deeply committed to inclusivity, diversity, and accessibility, ensuring that the great outdoors remain fun and accessible for everyone. The company works intentionally to create a sense of community and belonging for guests, employees, and franchise partners alike. KOA promotes a culture that encourages diversity of thought and experiences and continuously educates its team to foster an inclusive atmosphere. The brand also actively drives change within its industry through actionable initiatives, striving to maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment.

The Recreation Lead (RL) position at KOA is a key role focused on enhancing the guest experience by planning, organizing, executing, and leading a variety of recreational activities within the campground. These activities range from arts and crafts, games, and sports to dramatics, music, social events, hobbies, and themed weekend programs. The RL serves as an enthusiastic and creative leader who engages people of all ages, making the campground a hub of fun and excitement.

Success in this dynamic and visible role requires exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills, as the RL interacts with guests directly, welcoming them and encouraging participation. The position balances free and for-pay activities, not only to enrich the guest experience but also to boost ancillary revenue for the campground. The RL is responsible for maintaining and supervising recreation equipment and facilities while ensuring that all activities comply with safety standards.

Reporting to the designated supervisor and general manager, the Recreation Lead oversees all event preparations from start to finish. This includes creating and maintaining a cohesive events calendar that caters to diverse age groups, coordinating supplies and vendors, taking photos with appropriate releases, and collaborating with the marketing department to generate engaging social media content. Moreover, the RL manages staffing needs for activities, maintains professionalism and quality standards, and supports the hiring and training of a diverse team.

The Recreation Lead must demonstrate strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and delegation capabilities, especially in managing conflicts and motivating staff. Experience in recreational activities, the ability to adapt events for different participant needs, and a comfort level working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment are essential. Physical demands include the ability to stand for prolonged periods, lift significant weights, and work both indoors and outdoors, sometimes on uneven terrain and in varying weather conditions.

KOA is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to creating a workplace free from discrimination or harassment. The company ensures fair treatment for all employees and applicants regardless of race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, parental status, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or any other protected status. KOA does not sponsor Visas and currently does not hire in Alaska, District of Columbia, Idaho, Louisiana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, or Vermont. This role offers an exciting opportunity to join a passionate team dedicated to connecting people to the outdoors while fostering a positive, safe, and engaging environment at one of the world’s premier campground networks.
