Job Description
The City of New Braunfels, a vibrant community known for its dedication to preserving natural beauty and providing exceptional services, prides itself on upholding five core values: integrity, service, visionary leadership, stewardship of resources, and cultural heritage. Located in Texas, New Braunfels offers a rich blend of recreation, history, and community engagement, making it an admired place to live and work. The Parks and Recreation Department plays a key role in enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors through a variety of programs, leagues, events, and facility management services.
The Landa Recreation Center, a prominent facility under the Parks and Recreation Department, is currently seeking enthusiastic individuals to join its team as Recreation Assistants. This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about community service and recreation, and who are eager to contribute to high-quality, safe, and engaging programming. The position is classified as nonexempt with a competitive hiring salary range of $14.43 to $17.31 per hour, making it an appealing opportunity for those interested in public sector employment with meaningful community impact.
As a Recreation Assistant, the successful candidate will work under general supervision and assist in delivering a variety of recreational services to ensure the safety and satisfaction of employees, clients, and visitors at the department's facilities and programs. This position entails active involvement in the planning, organization, facilitation, and instruction of recreation programs aligned with city objectives and compliant with state and federal laws. Responsibilities include managing facility reservations, supporting youth and adult classes, coordinating special events, promoting positive customer relations, and maintaining facility cleanliness and safety.
The role also requires maintaining program records such as attendance, participant surveys, and incident reports, and managing inventory supplies efficiently. Effective communication skills are essential as the role involves answering inquiries, greeting guests, and providing courteous assistance both in person and via telephone. The Recreation Assistant is also expected to handle minor disciplinary matters in accordance with department policies, support city-wide event logistics, manage administrative tasks such as computer record keeping and cash handling within the registration and reservation systems, and sometimes substitute across other Parks and Recreation positions as needed.
Because the position involves working with children and youth in settings like recreation and educational programs, experience in such environments is preferred but not mandatory. A strong emphasis is placed on safety, with the incumbent responsible for identifying and reporting any safety issues or concerns to ensure a secure environment for all patrons.
Employment in this role requires availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays, reflecting the dynamic nature of recreation programming. The work environment includes both office and outdoor settings, sometimes involving exposure to varying weather conditions and physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds.
Overall, the Recreation Assistant position at Landa Recreation Center is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about public service, community engagement, and recreational program management. This role offers professional growth and development supported by the City’s comprehensive benefit programs, including retirement contribution matching, vacation accrual from the date of hire, longevity pay, tuition reimbursement, and ongoing training opportunities for both personal and professional enrichment.
