Job Description
The City of Tempe, located in the vibrant and growing state of Arizona, is a dynamic and progressive municipal government dedicated to providing outstanding community services and programs to its residents. Known for its commitment to innovation, quality of life, and community engagement, the City of Tempe offers a wide range of recreational, cultural, and social activities designed to enhance the well-being and connectivity of its citizens. As part of this dedication, the Community Services Department focuses on designing and managing programs that serve diverse populations, including specialized services for older adults. The Recreation Division, in particular, plays a vital role in maintaining and operating community centers and organizing events that promote active lifestyles and social interaction among residents of all ages.
The Recreation Coordinator position assigned to Pyle Adult 50+ programs is a full-time, regular employment opportunity with the City of Tempe, offering an annual salary range from $71,800 to $105,900, depending on the candidate's previous experience and qualifications. This role is classified as safety sensitive and requires adherence to specific workplace policies, including prohibition of marijuana use. The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In this key role, the Recreation Coordinator is responsible for overseeing facility operations at the Pyle Adult Recreation Center, creating and coordinating high-quality community programming, managing rentals, and organizing special events that cater specifically to the older adult population, ages 50 and above. The position demands a high level of organizational skills, creativity, and leadership to ensure that the programming offered is engaging, educational, and enriching, positively impacting the quality of life for participants.
Key responsibilities include planning and managing more than 250 annual classes, coordinating the logistics for large-scale events, and handling promotional materials such as program brochures. The Coordinator serves as the main point of contact for contracted instructors, overseeing their recruitment, conducting background checks, scheduling their sessions, and processing payments. Additionally, the role requires proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook), Zoom, website management, PeopleSoft, Timeclock Plus, and ActiveNet systems to efficiently manage both the administrative and operational components of the position.
Budget management is a crucial aspect, as the Recreation Coordinator prepares and monitors program and facility budgets to ensure fiscal responsibility. The role also involves supervising a diverse team of full-time, part-time, contract, seasonal, and volunteer staff members. Ensuring all programs and facilities are fully compliant with federal, state, and local laws, as well as city policies relating to public health, safety, ADA accessibility, and risk management, forms a major part of the job.
This position works collaboratively with various city departments, community groups, schools, vendors, and other stakeholders to facilitate joint programming and maximize facility utilization. Operational record-keeping and reporting are essential to maintaining transparent and efficient service delivery. The Recreation Coordinator also participates in facility or program enhancement planning, providing input on design, equipment procurement, and service improvement strategies.
Overall, this role offers a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults within the Tempe community by promoting a vibrant, active, and socially connected lifestyle. Candidates will find this position to be intellectually stimulating and highly impactful with ample opportunities for professional growth and personal satisfaction.
