Job Description

St. George Parks & Community Services Department is a dedicated municipal organization committed to enriching the quality of life for residents through diverse recreational programs, special events, and well-maintained community facilities. Located in St. George, Utah, the department plays a vital role in promoting health, wellness, community engagement, and cultural enrichment among the local population. The Parks & Community Services Division named Marathon focuses on delivering exceptional recreation experiences through careful planning, coordination, and management of city facilities, programs, and events. This division consistently seeks enthusiastic, motivated individuals who are passionate about community services and recreation to join their team on a part-time basis, supporting the city’s mission to foster a vibrant and healthy community.

The Part-Time Recreation Specialist position offers an hourly wage of $17.71 and is located in the City Commons Building of St. George, UT. This role is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and involves less than 28 hours of work per week on average, particularly aligned with the scheduling demands of programs and special events, including weekends, evenings, and holidays. A candidate selected for this position will be working under the guidance of the Recreation Supervisor and will assist in the development, coordination, and execution of a variety of recreation services, programs, and facility operations throughout the city. The role encompasses overseeing part-time employees and volunteers during assigned shifts or during events, ensuring high standards of service delivery and adherence to city policies.

Key responsibilities extend beyond mere supervision, incorporating training and recruitment assistance, customer service both in person and over the phone, program promotion, participant registration, administrative and clerical duties, and handling of monetary transactions according to city policies. The Recreation Specialist will also prepare informational materials such as brochures and flyers, maintain facilities, coordinate with sponsors and vendors, manage inventory control, and occasionally take full charge of specific programs or events under supervisory direction. The ideal candidate is expected to be dependable, highly motivated, customer-focused, computer literate, and skilled in working with diverse age groups. They should also be adept at physical tasks, capable of operating motor vehicles, and comfortable managing multiple priorities independently or as part of a team.

This position requires CPR, First Aid, and AED certification to be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained for the duration of employment as well as possession of a valid driver’s license, specifically a Utah Driver License to be acquired within 60 days if not initially held. Educationally, a high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory, with preference given to those possessing education in recreation or related fields. Experience requirements include at least two years in working with programs and special events within municipal or similar organizational settings, demonstrating proficiency in assigned duties, along with experience in supervisory roles and customer service.

Working conditions for this position reflect the dynamic environment of community recreation—requiring the ability to handle physical tasks with varying exertion levels and respond swiftly to any emergencies with proper judgment and knowledge of risk management. The St. George Parks & Community Services Department values individuals who can maintain a positive attitude through long or stressful events while fostering strong community relations, demonstrating effective communication skills, and providing leadership within teams. Part-time employees also enjoy benefits such as free access to city-operated golf courses, swimming pools, and recreation centers, enhancing their own participation in the city’s recreational offerings.

Joining the St. George Parks & Community Services Department as a Part-Time Recreation Specialist means contributing directly to vibrant community life by supporting the smooth and effective operation of recreational programs that bring people together, promote healthy lifestyles, and create memorable experiences for residents and visitors.
