Job Description
The City of Ventura is a vibrant community located on the beautiful California coast, renowned for its scenic parks, recreational opportunities, and strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The City of Ventura's Parks & Recreation Department plays a pivotal role in this mission by providing a wide array of services, programs, and partnerships that foster community engagement, wellness, and cultural enrichment. This department is structured into three principal divisions: Parks, Recreation, and Community Partnerships. The Community Partnerships Division is responsible for senior, arts, and cultural programming, management of historic sites and community centers, citywide events coordination, volunteer programs, and grant management. It also supports the Arts and Culture Commission, reflecting the City's ongoing dedication to fostering diverse cultural experiences for all ages and backgrounds.
We are excited to offer the opportunity to join our dynamic Parks & Recreation team as a Recreation Coordinator. This full-time position offers competitive hourly pay ranging from $32.09 to $39.00, depending on experience. The role is primarily assigned to the Barranca Vista Center (BVC), known as the City’s "Imagination Center." This unique facility serves a wide demographic across children, youth, adults, seniors, and families by providing an inviting space for creativity, learning, and community connection. The center boasts a large activity room and art studio and offers year-round classes in art, music, dance, fitness, and more.
As a Recreation Coordinator, you will play an integral role in planning, coordinating, and overseeing a diverse range of recreational, cultural, wellness, and community programs and events. You will be responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising part-time staff, volunteers, and contract instructors to ensure smooth program delivery. Your efforts will not only focus on program implementation but also on community outreach, building strong partnerships with local organizations, and maintaining excellent customer service that makes participants feel valued and supported.
In this role, you will handle important administrative duties such as assisting with program budgets, purchasing, inventory control, grant administration, and preparing various reports and promotional materials including newsletters and program communications. You will manage facility operations, coordinate rentals, and ensure the safety and maintenance of equipment and venues, ensuring they are always ready to serve the community.
The ideal candidate for this position is a detail-oriented, customer-focused professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys developing programs that positively impact community members. You should be adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously, communicating effectively with diverse groups, and leading staff and volunteers to achieve community goals. Prior experience in planning community programs, managing events, developing partnerships, and providing exceptional public service will be highly valuable in this position.
A combination of education and relevant experience is required. The preferred qualifications include some college coursework in public administration, recreation, cultural arts, or social services, along with at least two years of progressively responsible experience in related fields. Alternatively, candidates with three years of relevant experience without college coursework will also be considered. Spanish language skills are desirable but not mandatory. Depending on the assignment, a valid California Class C driver’s license may be required.
The City of Ventura values diversity and inclusion and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We actively welcome applicants from all walks of life and backgrounds, committed to creating a workplace environment that celebrates and supports diverse perspectives and talents. Joining the City of Ventura Parks & Recreation team means becoming part of a dedicated group of professionals working to enrich community life through inclusive programs, exceptional services, and meaningful partnerships.
