Job Description

The City of Malibu, located in California, is a vibrant coastal community known for its beautiful beaches, rich cultural heritage, and active lifestyle. The local government is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through comprehensive community services and recreational programs that foster health, wellness, and social engagement. Malibu City Hall serves as the hub for these services, supporting a diverse population with various activities and events to meet the community's dynamic needs.

The Community Services Department is seeking a full-time Recreation Coordinator to join its team. This position offers an annual salary range of $79,055 to $103,148 and is based at Malibu City Hall. The Recreation Coordinator will work under the guidance of the Community Services Deputy Director and Recreation Manager to implement, oversee, and schedule a variety of recreation and enrichment programs. The role is pivotal in coordinating afterschool programs, day camps, skateboarding activities, special events, and sports leagues designed to engage residents of all ages.

This position involves managing multiple facets of recreational operations, including hiring, training, supervising part-time staff and independent contractors, and ensuring smooth daily operations of recreational facilities like athletic fields, gymnasiums, skate parks, tennis courts, and parks year-round. The coordinator will also play a crucial role in marketing these programs by creating flyers, advertisements, press releases, and managing content for the City’s website and social media platforms.

The ideal candidate will be an organized and detail-oriented professional who excels in program planning, marketing, and staff supervision. Experience in sports coordination and community engagement is highly desirable, along with the ability to work collaboratively with external partners such as the Boys and Girls Club, local school districts, Malibu Library, and other nonprofit organizations. Strong leadership and communication skills are essential as the role demands clear enforcement of departmental rules, budget preparation and administration, and exceptional customer service.

The Recreation Coordinator will also be responsible for ensuring safety standards are met by conducting regular facility inspections, coordinating first aid, CPR training for staff, and handling medical emergencies when necessary. The role requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as community events demand.

This position offers a robust benefits package including health, dental, vision insurance, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, and participation in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). The City also supports employee development through tuition reimbursement and provides access to employee assistance programs. While the role requires full-time, on-site presence at Malibu City Hall, it represents an excellent opportunity for a dedicated individual to contribute meaningfully to the Malibu community's wellness and recreational life.

Applications for this position will be accepted until August 14, 2026, and interested candidates are encouraged to apply promptly to join this dynamic local government team focused on delivering quality services to the city’s residents.
