Job Description

The City of Malibu, renowned for its stunning coastal beauty and vibrant community spirit, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Recreation Coordinator to join its Community Services Department. Malibu is a picturesque city located in California, known for prioritizing high-quality public services and fostering a vibrant, resilient, and livable community for its residents and visitors. The City’s Community Services Department plays a pivotal role in enriching the lives of citizens by managing various recreation programs, sports leagues, special events, and community engagement initiatives. This department is committed to offering diverse and safe recreational activities that cater to people of all ages and interests, contributing positively to health, wellness, and community connectivity.

The Recreation Coordinator position is a full-time role under the general supervision of the Community Services Deputy Director and Recreation Manager. The ideal candidate will take a leadership role in implementing, overseeing, and scheduling a variety of City recreation and enrichment programs. These programs include afterschool activities, day camps, skateboarding events, special community events, and various sports leagues. This role is crucial to ensuring that the City's recreation facilities such as athletic fields, gymnasiums, skate parks, tennis courts, and parks operate smoothly year-round. The coordinator will be responsible for applying policies and guidelines that maintain facility safety and standards, as well as enforcing rules and regulations to make sure the community enjoys these amenities in a secure and organized environment.

A key responsibility of the Recreation Coordinator is program marketing and outreach. This includes creating and distributing flyers, advertisements, press releases, and digital content for the City’s website and social media platforms to effectively promote programs and events to Malibu residents. The coordinator must possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to engage the community and collaborate successfully with outside organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, the local School District, Malibu Library, and non-profit groups supporting recreational initiatives.

Supervision and staff management form another critical aspect of this role. The Recreation Coordinator hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises multiple part-time staff and independent contractors to ensure successful program delivery. The ability to delegate tasks, prioritize work, and maintain an organized schedule is essential to managing multiple projects and events under tight deadlines. Additionally, the coordinator manages training needs by organizing first aid, CPR, and safety programs for staff and volunteers, ensuring proper certification and readiness to handle emergencies.

This role requires flexibility, as work sometimes involves nights, weekends, and holidays to support various city events and programs. The Recreation Coordinator is also engaged in administrative duties, including budget preparation and control, inventory management, handling grant applications, and maintaining detailed records and reports on program activities. The position demands a detail-oriented individual with critical thinking skills who can multitask effectively while maintaining a positive attitude and delivering outstanding customer service to public patrons, contractors, and City employees.

The ideal candidate will bring at least three years of progressively responsible experience in recreation program coordination, preferably with a background or education equivalent to an associate degree in recreation, child development, sports exercise, public administration, or a related field. Certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, and Safe Food Handling are required to ensure public safety and compliance with health regulations.

In summary, the Recreation Coordinator serves as a vital link between the City, its residents, and community partners, ensuring that recreational and sporting opportunities are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all. This position offers a rewarding chance to contribute to Malibu’s community well-being and foster strong partnerships that enhance local recreational offerings.
