Job Description

The City of Hiawatha is a vibrant community located in the heart of the bustling Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha metropolitan area. Known for its commitment to providing exceptional public services and a high quality of life for its residents, the City of Hiawatha continues to grow and develop as a desirable place to live, work, and play. The city is recognized for its beautiful parks, robust recreational opportunities, and strong community-oriented programs that engage residents of all ages.

The City has an exciting opportunity for a Recreation Coordinator to join the Parks & Recreation Department. This position plays a key role in shaping and managing a comprehensive citywide recreation plan that offers a wide variety of programs and activities to the community. Reporting directly to the Director of Parks & Recreation, the Recreation Coordinator will be responsible for oversight and coordination of athletic leagues, instructional programs, day camps, outdoor recreation activities, and special events across the city. The role demands a dynamic, organized, and proactive individual who thrives in a community-focused environment and is passionate about fostering inclusive recreational opportunities.

This full-time position offers a competitive starting salary range of $52,000 to $60,000, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and skillset. In addition to monetary compensation, the City of Hiawatha provides an attractive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance options, long-term disability coverage, a generous paid leave program, membership in the Iowa Parks and Recreation Association, and participation in the Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System (IPERS). This ensures that the Recreation Coordinator is well supported both professionally and personally.

The successful candidate will bring a combination of education and experience tailored to meet the community’s recreational needs. Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in recreation, sports management, or a related field. Experience in recreation programming is highly valued, but a combination of education, training, and demonstrated leadership competencies may also satisfy the requirements for this role. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about recreation services, skilled in program coordination, and eager to contribute to the community’s wellness and engagement through innovative and well-managed recreational programs.

Working closely with city staff, volunteers, and community partners, the Recreation Coordinator will facilitate programs that encourage healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and skill development. They will also be expected to manage resources effectively, coordinate schedules, and lead outreach efforts to maximize community involvement. The role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, all within a municipal government setting that values public service and accountability.

The application process is straightforward, with the position open until filled. Interested candidates can find the application and job description on the City of Hiawatha’s official website under job opportunities. Applications and resumes must be submitted to the Clerk’s Office located at 101 Emmons Street, Hiawatha, Iowa 52233. The city is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and encourages all qualified individuals to apply.
