Job Description
The City of Charleston is a vibrant and historic municipality located in South Carolina, known for its rich culture, heritage, and commitment to providing excellent services to its residents. The city administration operates through various departments dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in the community. One of these departments is the Culture & Recreation Department, which focuses on offering a wide range of recreational programs and activities designed to enrich the lives of citizens and foster community engagement. The Recreation Community Programs division plays a crucial role within the department by managing and delivering diverse programs that cater to people of all ages and interests, including youth sports, adult sports, gymnastics, aquatics, and therapeutic activities, among others.
This role is for a Recreation Program Coordinator within the City of Charleston's Culture & Recreation Department, specifically within the Recreation Community Programs division. This position is non-exempt and offers an hourly salary ranging from $25.92 to $28.05, with an annual salary range of $50,544.00 to $54,697.50. The coordinator will be responsible for planning, promoting, organizing, and administering a specific component of the city’s recreation programs. The main goal is to ensure that the programs are well-designed, effectively managed, and successfully meet the needs of the community. This involves a hands-on approach to coordinating operations, including program design, event scheduling, registration management, staff hiring and scheduling, budgeting, procurement of supplies and equipment, and marketing efforts in collaboration with the Recreation Department.
The Recreation Program Coordinator also plays an essential role in staff development, overseeing contractors, and volunteers to ensure quality service delivery. Budget management and accurate record-keeping are critical aspects of the position, along with serving as a technical advisor to higher authorities, providing insights and recommendations to adapt programs to community needs. The coordinator will introduce new activities, equipment, and materials to the staff, helping to innovate and enhance program offerings.
Another important aspect of this role involves community engagement and representation. The coordinator acts as a recreation ambassador, interpreting program benefits to the public, participating in community meetings, and collaborating with allied public and voluntary agencies. Teamwork is emphasized, as the coordinator works with other recreation personnel to maintain a well-balanced, coordinated, and integrated recreation system. The role also requires close cooperation with community volunteers, contractors, and various City of Charleston departments to ensure cohesive program implementation.
The position requires flexibility in working hours, as it may involve evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency schedules during major storms or other critical situations. This reflects the city’s commitment to maintaining continuous and reliable recreational services for its residents.
Overall, the Recreation Program Coordinator position offers a rewarding opportunity for individuals passionate about community recreation and programming. It combines administrative, promotional, and community-focused responsibilities to create impactful and accessible recreational experiences for the diverse population of Charleston. With comprehensive benefits and a supportive city government environment, this position is ideal for professionals seeking to contribute their skills to the public sector while promoting wellness and community engagement through recreation.
