The City of Waukesha, located in Wisconsin, is a vibrant community known for its commitment to providing high-quality recreational events and services to its residents and visitors. Among its many community programs, the city organizes and operates popular events such as the Neighborhood Beer Gardens and the Waukesha Oktoberfest. These events celebrate local culture, provide entertainment, and offer a lively atmosphere for community members to gather and enjoy social activities. The City of Waukesha is dedicated to maintaining safe and well-managed public spaces where all patrons can have a fantastic experience. As part of this commitment, the city hires Recreation Assistants to support the operation of fermented malt beverage concessions during these events.
The Recreation Assistant - Fermented Malt Beverage Concessions role is a seasonal, part-time position designed for individuals aged 18 and older who are interested in customer service and event operations. The primary function of this position is to provide excellent customer service while handling all aspects of selling and serving alcoholic beverages in compliance with legal and safety standards. This includes proper money handling, using computer programs associated with sales transactions, maintaining safe food handling practices, and ensuring the concession area remains sanitary and well-maintained throughout the event.
Scheduled shifts for the Neighborhood Beer Garden operation occur on August 27-29, 2026, and September 10-12, 2026, while the Waukesha Oktoberfest operation takes place on September 25 and 26, 2026. The shifts involve evening and weekend work with varying times, including some setup and teardown hours on specific weekdays. The hourly pay rate for this position is $17, reflecting the specialized responsibilities related to serving alcoholic beverages and ensuring customer safety.
In this role, Recreation Assistants are responsible for selling beverage concessions, managing cash registers with strict adherence to security protocols, preparing products for sale, and maintaining cleanliness according to Health Department standards. They are also expected to enforce facility rules, including age verification through wrist-banding patrons, and provide emergency care within their level of training. Site supervisors oversee these employees, and additional duties may be assigned to support smooth event execution. Candidates must attend mandatory paid training sessions prior to employment to familiarize themselves with policies, procedures, and safety standards.
Applicants must possess valid certification for selling and serving alcohol and successfully pass background and drug screening before employment. This ensures that all staff maintain a safe and responsible environment during these popular community events. Although this specific position does not include additional benefits, it offers a unique opportunity to work in a community-focused setting, gain valuable customer service experience, and participate in well-loved local traditions. The City of Waukesha is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion in its hiring practices.
