As part of its mission to Set the Standard for a Safe and Secure City, the department plays an essential role in environmental health by ensuring compliance with public health regulations and providing important permitting services. The environmental section within the health department is responsible for handling numerous administrative and clerical functions that support these critical public health initiatives. This position serves as the frontline support to this important mission by carrying out essential clerical tasks with professionalism and accuracy, positively impacting both city operations and community well-being.
This role involves performing all routine clerical work necessary for the environmental section of the Midland Health Department. The individual in this position supports environmental health permitting through efficient management of records and accurate processing of payments and fees. The role requires a high level of customer service skill to assist citizens and visitors, responding to inquiries, scheduling appointments, and providing clear information about environmental health permits related to food establishments, septic systems, swimming pools, and daycare facilities. Furthermore, the job includes maintaining organized filing systems for permits, processing applications, tracking cash reports, and managing office supplies to ensure smooth operations within the office. This position is pivotal in the department's ability to deliver timely and accurate environmental health services to the community.
The job also entails engagement beyond routine clerical tasks by assisting with public health activities both within the office setting and the broader community. This interaction is critical to promoting the health department's goals and facilitating public health education and awareness initiatives. The successful candidate will be expected to have basic knowledge of health or public health sectors, along with strong abilities in data entry, operation of office equipment, bookkeeping, and typing at a proficient speed. Handling office machinery such as computers, copiers, and credit card readers efficiently is essential for this role. Moreover, the candidate needs to be comfortable working in a dynamic environment that occasionally involves exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals typical in a health department setting.
Overall, the role of Environmental Health Clerk at the City of Midland offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to public health through administrative excellence and direct community interaction. It is a full-time clerical position ideal for individuals who bring strong organizational skills, customer service experience, and attention to detail.
