Job Description
MiraCosta College, located in California, is a community college dedicated to providing quality educational opportunities and support services to a diverse student population. The college emphasizes a welcoming and accessible atmosphere for all visitors, students, and staff. As part of its ongoing commitment to service excellence, the Public Information Office (PIO) at MiraCosta College is seeking to build a pool of substitute Receptionist/Switchboard Operators. These roles are essential in maintaining an efficient flow of communication and providing friendly, knowledgeable assistance to the public and campus community.
MiraCosta College operates with a focus on fostering an engaging learning environment alongside streamlined administrative support. The Public Information Office plays a key role in this mission by serving as the primary contact point for information requests and general inquiries. The need for substitute receptionists arises to ensure continuous support during peak times, staff absences, or other occasions requiring flexible workforce deployment. This on-call, substitute position offers an opportunity for individuals who are adaptable and skilled in customer service to contribute to the campus community without a fixed schedule.
The substitute Receptionist/Switchboard Operator will be positioned at the information desk located in the lobby of the Administration Building, acting as the first point of contact for visitors and callers. The individual will be responsible for answering questions, providing accurate information, and directing inquiries appropriately. This role requires excellent communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently, often under short-notice conditions. The position pays $25.47 per hour, corresponding to range 9, step 1 on the college’s pay scale, offering competitive hourly compensation.
Applicants should be aware of the residency requirement set forth by MiraCosta College Board Policy 7800, which mandates that classified staff, administrators, and temporary/hourly short-term employees maintain a principal residence within 200 road miles of their assigned district worksite in California. This policy is designed to promote consistent, high-quality support services and maintain operational continuity. Exceptions to this residency requirement may be considered on a case-by-case basis for a limited period not exceeding twelve consecutive months.
This role suits individuals who thrive in dynamic environments, value community engagement, and possess a strong commitment to upholding institutional standards. Substitute Receptionist/Switchboard Operators will have their applications reviewed periodically as shifts become available through June 30, 2027, when the current application pool expires. There will be a new posting after this date for those still interested in the role to reapply.
Working as a substitute receptionist at MiraCosta College offers the chance to develop valuable skills in communication, public relations, and administrative operations within an educational institution dedicated to student success and community involvement. As the gateway to the college’s public face, you will contribute directly to creating a welcoming atmosphere and ensuring smooth information flow across departments.
