Job Description
The Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) is a specialized establishment dedicated to providing comprehensive care and support for elderly residents. It operates with a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for seniors by offering nutritious meals, a safe environment, and a caring community. This type of facility cares specifically for older adults who may need assistance with daily activities while promoting their independence and dignity. The RCFE integrates health services, personal care, and social activities, creating an environment that addresses the physical, emotional, and nutritional needs of its residents. The culinary operations within such a facility are crucial, as meal preparation and dietary management are central to resident health and satisfaction. The dietary and kitchen department focuses on offering meals that align with therapeutic diets and nutritional guidelines tailored specifically for the elderly population and their various health conditions.
The RCFE Cook role is pivotal within the dietary department, tasked with the hands-on preparation and serving of meals according to established menus, including therapeutic and modified diets. This position ensures that all food served meets health standards for safety, sanitation, and nutritional value, while also maintaining the taste and presentation that residents expect. Operating during the shift from 10:00am to 6:30pm, the RCFE Cook not only prepares large quantities of food but also manages food storage and oversees the kitchen's cleanliness and safety protocols. This role includes supervising dietary staff when the dietary supervisor is absent, ensuring that the team meets all operational and health standards consistently. The cook also assists in receiving and storing food items properly, maintaining thorough documentation of menu changes and substitutions for residents' dietary needs.
In addition to cooking duties, this position demands a solid understanding of nutrition concepts and the ability to handle special diets designed for medical requirements. Coordination in advance food preparation and maintaining meal schedules are essential responsibilities. The cook must also maintain sanitation through cleaning kitchen equipment and food prep areas and report any issues with kitchen appliances or food supply shortages promptly. Communication and cooperation with all facility staff, residents, and the public are vital for fostering a compassionate and supportive facility environment. This role requires ongoing staff education and participation in emergency response and safety training according to the standards set by the Department of Social Services, specifically the Community Care Licensing Division. The RCFE Cook must hold and maintain relevant certifications such as a Food Handler Card (ServSafe or equivalent), First Aid, and CPR/BLS certifications, alongside passing a California background check. This is a non-exempt position as per the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not classified as a high-risk job under OSHA guidelines. Candidates who demonstrate dependability, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage priorities with professionalism are ideal for this meaningful career opportunity in elder care culinary services.
