This opportunity is with RAGBRAI, the world's largest and longest-running annual bicycle ride, which attracts more than 20,000 riders from across all 50 states and over 20 countries each year. RAGBRAI highlights small-town Iowa and the welcoming communities that have hosted the ride for over 52 years.
The role available is an Event Operations position based in Des Moines, IA, requiring in-office participation. This full-time role offers an annual salary range of $45,000 to $50,000 and focuses on the effective planning, management, and execution of large-scale events, specifically RAGBRAI. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in event operations, strong leadership and organizational skills, and a passion for delivering outstanding participant experiences in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
Key responsibilities include coordinating all operational components from contract execution through post-event closeout, working closely with host towns to assign campground spaces, and managing vendor relationships with public works and shower providers. The successful candidate will oversee the RAGBRAI Crew consisting of 70+ members, handling hiring, position assignments, communication, and payment processing. They will also reserve rental vehicles, coordinate financial documentation for community payments involved in the RAGBRAI Give Back program, and assist the creative team in developing interactive maps.
Further duties involve supporting the planning and execution of various associated annual events such as the Route Announcement Party and Route Inspection, as well as serving as the lead liaison between charters, overnight towns, and RAGBRAI. During the event week, the role requires managing the RAGBRAI Information Tent, providing exceptional customer service to participants. This position demands quick decision-making, strong problem-solving skills, initiative, and a collaborative spirit to succeed in a dynamic team environment.

Job Requirements
- Based in Des Moines, IA with in-office participation
- Authorized to work in the applicable location

Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in event management, sports and recreation management or similar field preferred
- 1-3+ years of experience in event operations or a similar field
- Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis towards participant experience
- Effective organization and time management skills
- Strong leadership abilities and initiative
- Quick decision-making and problem-solving abilities
- Reliant, self-paced worker that can proactively strategize on future responsibilities
- Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment
- Passionate and enthusiastic for the event and/or cycling industry
Job Duties
- Plan, produce, and execute operational components for assigned events from contract execution through post-event closeout
- Partake in advance travel meetings to assist towns in their preparations, including identifying and assigning campground spaces, working with Public Works departments and shower vendors to identify best locations and placing various RAGBRAI accommodations
- Oversee the Charter program and serve as the primary liaison between Charters, Overnight Towns, and RAGBRAI
- Manage the RAGBRAI Crew, a group of 70+ individuals that assist with operations during the ride, which includes assigning positions, interviewing and hiring candidates, communicating pre-event logistics, and processing all payments
- Reserve all rental vehicles for the week of RAGBRAI and the Route Inspection in June
- Collect and track necessary documentation from host communities to process financial payments as part of the RAGBRAI Give Back program
- Actively work alongside RAGBRAI Staff to project, track and adhere to annual budget(s)
- Assist RAGBRAI Creative Director in creation and implementation of Overnight Town maps using the Google MYMAPS software
- Support RAGBRAI staff in planning and execution of various annual events, including the Route Announcement Party, Overnight & Pass-Through Town Meeting, Route Inspection, and Fall Ride
- During the week of RAGBRAI, command the RAGBRAI Information Tent and provide customer service to all participants
- Other duties as assigned
