The role of Quality Control Color Shader at the Batavia, IL plant is a pivotal position within Hentzen Coatings. The position is full-time, operating primarily on the first shift from Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., plus Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Compensation for this role ranges from $20.00 to $25.00 per hour, depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications. This role requires a meticulous and technically skilled individual responsible for adjusting wet properties and tinting a diverse range of liquid coatings to match formula specifications meticulously.
The Quality Control Color Shader uses advanced tools such as the spectrophotometer (X-Rite) to measure color values and compare them to established standards, ensuring precision in color matching. The shader creates test panels, mainly through hand spraying, and evaluates these visually for color and appearance conformity. Collaboration is a key aspect of the role, as the shader works closely with chemists and supervisors to revise procedures and additives, contributing to continuous quality and formula improvements. The role also involves entering quality results into data management systems and leveraging historical data to optimize batch adjustments. In addition to color matching, the Shader performs quality control laboratory tests like viscosity and solids measurement and directly adds various additives to production tanks.
Health and safety play critical roles in the daily operations of the Quality Control Color Shader. The position includes responsibilities for handling hazardous waste disposal following specialized training provided by the Environmental and Safety department. Compliance with all quality, safety, and company regulations is mandatory, as is the proper handling and storage of equipment after use. The environment is a well-ventilated production setting that may expose employees to machinery, fumes, airborne particles, and varying noise levels, necessitating personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, flame-retardant uniforms, respirators, and earplugs when required. This role requires physical capabilities such as lifting up to 65 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, alongside vision requirements to ensure color accuracy and safety.

- Preferred education level: Associate's or two-year college degree or equivalent
- Preferred experience level: Three or more years of experience in batch creation, wet testing, color matching, and paint characteristics in a manufacturing setting
- Ability to manipulate QC data in Excel and Access databases
- Excellent color vision
- Excellent math skills including metric to standard conversions
- Superb written and verbal communication skills

Job Qualifications

- Understand and analyze performance metrics such as FRC (hits/batch), cycle time and on time delivery to drive QC process improvements preferred
- Ability to manipulate QC data in Excel and Access databases
- Excellent color vision
- Excellent math skills including metric to standard conversions
- Superb written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, Outlook), ERP system and other office machinery

Job Duties
- Determine the type and amount of color and gloss additives required to match product to physical standards
- Use a spectrophotometer (X-Rite) to obtain color values against stored standards and interpret results
- Create test panels primarily by hand spraying and inspect panels visually for both color and appearance
- Collaborate with chemists and supervisors in determining procedures and additives to use on out-of-spec products and update formulas for better color come off in future batches
- Enter final quality results in data management program
- Use historical data in database to tint and adjust batches
- Perform QC lab technician responsibilities such as viscosity, solids, weight per gallon
- Physically add tints, flatteners, and other additives directly to tanks
- Comply with all quality, safety, and work rules and regulations
- Clean up equipment and properly store equipment
