The role of Public Spaces Attendant (Custodian) at J&P Hospitality is an essential position within the Property Operations department, reporting directly to the General Manager. This on-site, non-exempt role is crucial in maintaining the overall appearance, cleanliness, and safety of the hotel’s public areas, as well as the exterior grounds and laundry facilities. The Public Spaces Attendant undertakes a variety of tasks including sanitation of lobbies, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, and shared spaces, along with supporting laundry operations by washing, drying, and folding linens. They also assist the housekeeping team in preparing guest rooms for check-in and carry out minor maintenance activities such as changing light bulbs and unclogging drains as trained.
This position demands a proactive individual who is attentive to safety hazards and capable of responding promptly to emergencies like fire alarms or water leaks to ensure a secure environment for both guests and staff. The Public Spaces Attendant must use cleaning products and equipment following safety guidelines and adhere to company policies. Flexibility in working hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays is expected, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with other team members to uphold property standards.
The role requires individuals who can perform physically demanding duties including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting weights up to 25 pounds independently or up to 100 pounds with assistance. Sensory awareness such as the ability to detect odors of smoke or gas is important for safety purposes. Job Duties
- Clean and sanitize all public areas, including lobbies, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, and other shared spaces
- wash, dry, and fold laundry as needed to support housekeeping operations
- assist with preparing guest rooms for check-in by supporting the housekeeping team
- maintain cleanliness and orderliness of exterior grounds (e.g., picking up trash, emptying trash cans, clearing walkways, cleaning dumpster area, sweeping entryways)
- monitor common areas for safety hazards and report issues to the General Manager
- respond promptly to emergencies, including fire alarms, water leaks, electrical outages, or other urgent facility needs
- use cleaning products and tools safely and in accordance with training and safety guidelines
- perform light maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, unclogging drains, or resetting breakers as trained
- perform other job duties as assigned
