Job Description

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a renowned institution dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and sharing the wonders of the natural world with diverse audiences. Established over a century ago, this museum is a pillar in the Pittsburgh community and beyond, offering rich educational opportunities, scientific research, and a wide range of exhibits that draw visitors from around the world. The museum prides itself on its dedication to inclusivity, scientific excellence, and engaging the public through innovative programs and exhibitions. As a key part of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, it contributes to a unified cultural experience along with sister museums, enhancing the appeal of the region as a vibrant hub for arts and sciences.

The Public Program and Events Manager role is a pivotal position within the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. This role is charged with the production and coordination of events and the development of forward-facing public programming designed to engage and grow the museum’s audience. This includes spearheading the conceptualization, scheduling, and execution of a variety of public programs throughout the year that captivate the broader Pittsburgh community as well as visitors from beyond the region. Working under the direction of the Senior Director of Museum Experience, the Manager collaborates closely with multiple museum departments and is a key player in ensuring that each event and program seamlessly reflects the museum’s overarching mission and strategic vision.

The responsibilities of the Public Program and Events Manager go beyond simple event planning; this position requires strategic thinking, budget management, and program evaluation. It demands a forward-thinking approach that balances creative programming with pragmatic resource allocation to maximize impact and return on investment. The role is also highly collaborative, requiring the Manager to work dynamically with a diverse team of staff members across departments, bringing together resources and expertise to produce high-quality, inclusive public offerings.

Seasoned in managing budgets, the Manager ensures effective use of funds allocated for public programs and events while driving revenue where possible. The position entails considerable flexibility in working hours, including evenings and weekends, to support events and programs that typically occur outside standard business hours. This role offers a salary in the range of $45,000 to $55,000, dependent on experience, reflecting the importance and responsibilities of the position. Aspiring candidates are encouraged to apply by the deadline on June 5th through the Carnegie Museum’s official Opportunities Page.

Joining the Carnegie Museum of Natural History as a Public Program and Events Manager offers a unique opportunity to influence how natural history is communicated to the public, foster community partnerships, and contribute to one of the premier scientific institutions in the United States. This role is perfect for an individual passionate about education, community engagement, and the natural sciences, who is looking to build meaningful programs from the ground up in a supportive and prestigious environment.
