The role of a Kitchen Steward within this organization is pivotal in maintaining the seamless operation of the kitchen and food service areas. As a Kitchen Steward, the employee will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing dishes, glassware, utensils, and pots according to departmental guidelines, thereby ensuring all items used in food preparation and service meet stringent hygiene standards. This position requires meticulous attention to detail in cleaning and organizing dish areas, storage spaces, and other food prep areas including the café section.

In addition to cleaning duties, the Kitchen Steward plays an active role in assisting with receiving food and supply orders, which includes labeling and stock rotation to maintain inventory efficiency and prevent waste. The role requires a hands-on approach to supporting kitchen operations by organizing supplies and ensuring that all areas are maintained in a safe and sanitary condition.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods
  • Availability to work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
  • Capacity to lift and move heavy items safely
  • Must adhere to health and safety standards
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • Willingness to wear required uniform such as non-slip shoes, apron and hairnet or hat

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous experience in kitchen or food service environment an asset
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Basic knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and handle manual tasks

Job Duties

  • Wash dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, and/or pans, with machine or by hand
  • Empty and clean all garbage cans with hot water, allow to air dry, place liner bag in can
  • Maintain kitchen work areas, equipment, and utensils in safe, clean and orderly condition
  • Place clean dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment in appropriate storage areas
  • Sort and remove trash, compost and cardboard by placing it in designated pickup areas
  • Clean floors, counter tops, walk in, freezer and food prep areas
  • Organize and label walk in refrigerator items for FIFO (First In, First Out) use
  • Organize bulk items for FIFO and ensure bins are full
  • Load or unload trucks, carts or pallets of food and supplies
  • Stock supplies such as food, utensils and paper goods
  • Transfer supplies and equipment between storage and work areas, by hand or using hand trucks
  • Clean hoods and vents
  • Leave kitchen and food service area in clean and sanitary condition at end of shift
  • Assist in food cleaning and preparation
