Job Description
Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) is a public community college located in Wilmington, North Carolina, providing a wide range of academic and vocational programs to support the educational and career goals of its diverse student population. As an institution dedicated to quality education and workforce development, CFCC offers unique hands-on training opportunities, including specialized maritime programs that prepare students for commercial and research vessel operations. The college is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that respects all individuals and complies with equal opportunity employment laws and educational statutes. CFCC values diversity, innovation, and community engagement, striving to cultivate skills that meet the demands of today’s dynamic job market.\n\nThe position of Ship Steward is a vital role within CFCC’s maritime training program, where the successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Captain aboard CFCC's training vessels. This position focuses on providing excellent culinary support by preparing and serving meals to the crew and trainees during ship voyages. The Ship Steward is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and order of the galley and pantry areas and managing food and cleaning supplies efficiently, ensuring smooth culinary operations within budgetary constraints. The role may occasionally require preparing special meals catering to dietary restrictions such as vegetarian or medical needs. This position demands a high level of adaptability, as meal schedules may shift due to the ship’s operational timeline.\n\nWork in this role requires knowledge of safe food handling, shipboard sanitation practices, and efficient stock control to uphold hygiene and operational standards at sea. The candidate must be capable of performing their duties independently while maintaining cooperative relationships with ship personnel and understanding the college’s policies and procedures. Physical stamina, multitasking ability, and readiness to work under various maritime weather and sea conditions are essential. This position also involves record keeping and requires a strong command of English language skills and basic mathematics.\n\nApplicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent and possess or be able to obtain key certifications such as the ServSafe Food Handler Certification, a Transportation Worker Identification Card, and a U.S. Passport. Experience working in commercial kitchens and being comfortable on watercraft in various sea states is also required. Preferred qualifications include an associate degree or training in Culinary Arts, sea experience preferably in steward departments on oceanographic or other ocean-going vessels, U.S. Merchant Mariner’s Document eligibility, and STCW certification. CFCC emphasizes that candidates be prepared to submit unofficial and official transcripts along with certifications during the application process. This position offers a unique opportunity to combine culinary skills with maritime training in an educational environment dedicated to student and professional growth.
