Job Description
This job opportunity is offered by a city governmental department, which is dedicated to providing quality public services to its community through various initiatives and programs. The department operates within a professional setting that emphasizes health, safety, and customer service excellence, especially in food preparation and hospitality services. The position is based in a commercial kitchen environment that adheres to strict regulations by local, state, and health authorities to ensure the highest standards of food safety and sanitation are met. Working for a city entity means engaging with a diverse population, contributing to public health, and supporting community needs while benefiting from a stable employment structure and clear municipal policies.
The role in question is for a Kitchen Cook who works under close supervision to prepare and cook menu items strictly following the Department of Health regulations and the City’s policies and procedures. This is a hands-on culinary position focused on food preparation using various kitchen equipment including broilers, ovens, grills, and fryers. The kitchen cook is responsible for applying consistent standard portion sizes and cooking methods such as battering, breading, seasoning, and marinating. A critical aspect of the role involves maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment and complying with all health regulations, including those set by Arizona Department of Health and County health ordinances.
Inventory management is another essential responsibility, as the cook assists in managing food and supply inventory, ensuring adequate stock levels at all times to meet service demands. The role also requires rotating all products properly to maintain food quality and safety. Beyond technical cooking skills, this position demands a strong commitment to safety practices to prevent accidents and injuries in a commercial kitchen environment where risks such as burns and cuts are present. The job ensures the promotion of courteous and cooperative behavior while interacting with the public and other city employees, supporting the city’s mission and values.
Candidates for this position must hold at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent, be 18 years of age or older, and have a minimum of one year of relevant experience as a kitchen or line cook, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Food Handler’s permit with the Yuma County Health Department must be obtained within one week of hire. While culinary education is preferred, it is not mandatory, and bilingual skills in English and Spanish are also favored. The role requires a valid U.S. state driver's license and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as frequently standing, lifting, carrying, and moving up to 50 pounds of food, materials, and equipment.
This position is open until filled, with the first review of applications scheduled for May 7, 2026, followed by reviews every 8 days until a candidate is selected. Working in this capacity provides an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to grow their culinary career within a structured and community-focused municipal environment, offering job security, skill development, and the chance to contribute directly to public service.
