This role is based in the Deli Bakery Department at the Food Lion location in Portsmouth, Virginia, specifically at 3539 Airline Blvd. As a member of the deli bakery team, the primary purpose of this position is to provide outstanding customer service while maintaining the high standards set forth by Food Lion's standard practice manual. This role requires a strong focus on ensuring product quality and presentation, minimizing shrink, and maximizing sales by delivering fast, friendly, and accurate service.
The successful candidate will be responsible for understanding the ingredients and preparation methods used in deli and bakery products, following all technical procedures and sanitation requirements to guarantee food safety. This position demands attention to detail in ordering, receiving, preparing, conditioning, and displaying merchandise according to company policies and guidelines. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous experience in retail or food service is beneficial
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to follow food safety and sanitation guidelines
- Capability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks like lifting
- Commitment to adhere to company policies and safety regulations
- Ability to learn and apply technical procedures related to product preparation
Job Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and customer service skills
- Ability and willingness to learn multiple tasks and technical requirements of the job
- Ability to use technical information to solve problems
- Must meet minimum age requirements to perform specific job functions

Job Duties
- Maintain an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with primary emphasis on fast, friendly, and accurate customer service to create a positive shopping experience
- Be courteous and helpful to other associates
- Understand the use of ingredients, mixes, and icings and coordinate colors
- Understand production standards for processing of all product
- Follow all technical manuals for processing of product, label placement, etc.
- Ensure proper sanitation of department, equipment and proper food handling/preparation
- Ensure that ordering, receiving, preparation, conditioning and displaying of merchandise is done in accordance with policies and guidelines
- Maintain a complete understanding of and adherence to company guidelines, policies and standard practice
- Understand and follow Food Safety and Workplace Safety guidelines and procedures
- Observe and correct all unsafe conditions that could cause associate or customer accidents
- Report all associate and customer accidents in accordance with established Food Lion procedures to the Manager on Duty
- Ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations
- Wear the Food Lion uniform with apron, complete with name badge, when on duty, has a neat and clean appearance while adhering to the Food Lion dress code
- Understand and use company tools such as
- average cost inventory system (ACIS) and ordering (CAO)
- Successfully complete Computer Based Training (CBT), Training Packet and Training Aid courses
- Perform all other duties as assigned
