Job Description

The City of Santa Ana, a vibrant and growing municipality located in Southern California, is dedicated to providing exceptional public services to its diverse community. The Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Agency is a crucial part of this commitment, offering a wide array of recreational, educational, and wellness programs designed to enhance the quality of life for individuals of all ages. This agency manages multiple facilities and programs ranging from youth and adult sports leagues, health and wellness programming, and special events, to senior services, the nature center, and even the beloved Santa Ana Zoo.

The City of Santa Ana is currently seeking motivated, results-oriented individuals with a great attitude and a passion for public service to join their team on a part-time basis. These positions provide flexible work hours, with incumbents working up to 19 hours per week, and schedules that vary depending on program and participant needs. Successful candidates must be prepared to work during various shifts throughout the day, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and notably, must be available for the City's annual Independence Day/4th of July celebration.

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working in dynamic environments and who want to make a direct impact on their community by assisting with a broad spectrum of activities. Employees will be engaged in coordinating and implementing recreational and educational programs, managing facility reservations, promoting community events, and ensuring the safety and cleanliness of parks and recreational facilities. Depending on assignment, duties could range from maintaining a community garden, supporting athletic programs, to working with animals at the Santa Ana Zoo.

Staff in these roles are vital to maintaining the vibrancy of Santa Ana’s community programs, helping to foster an inclusive, safe, and engaging atmosphere for all participants. The City encourages bilingual candidates, particularly those fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Hmong, Korean, or Samoan, as bilingual pay is provided when applicable. Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Depending on assignment, must possess and retain a California Class C Driver's License
  • Education and experience equivalent to high school graduation
  • Some experience planning and implementing activities and events preferably in Recreation
  • Ability to deal professionally with participants of all ages including children and senior citizens
  • Must be willing and able to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends, holidays, and mandated special events
  • If assigned to Recreation, must be able to lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to 60 pounds
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Must be willing to follow all safety protocols
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Hmong, Korean, or Samoan highly desirable

Job Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Education and experience equivalent to high school graduation

  • Knowledge of public relations and customer service
  • Knowledge of PRCSA rules and regulations
  • Familiarity with personal computers and current office software applications
  • Skills in basic computer use including Microsoft Word, calculator, phone, and office equipment
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and communicate respectfully with team members and the public
  • Ability to perform assignments with limited supervision
  • Ability to work in team environments
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills

Job Duties

  • Assist with coordination and implementation of recreation and educational activities including seminars, special events, games, mini-excursions, competitive activities
  • Open and close PRCSA facilities for reservations at various centers throughout the city (may be applicable to certain divisions only)
  • Set up and tear down PRCSA facilities when required
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness of facilities and inventory of restroom facilities
  • Conduct regular inspections and report hazardous or unsafe conditions of PRCSA facilities and/or parks
  • Monitor and enforce rules as outlined in policies and facility regulations
  • Write detailed reports informing administration of any atypical behavior at facilities
  • Assist with promotion of programs
  • Conduct group transportation activities
  • Compile program and activity descriptions
  • Maintain inventory of materials and supplies
  • Solicit event sponsors
  • Contribute to the development of flyers and newsletters
  • Instruct staff and/or volunteers in implementation of programs and activities
  • Monitor and evaluate daily activities and make recommendations for improvement
  • Refer staff, volunteers, and participants to center coordinator for disciplinary action or recognition
  • Participate cooperatively in work team activities
  • Provide customer assistance in person and over the telephone
  • Perform other tasks as required
  • If assigned to Community Garden Program, duties also include composting, weeding, pruning, planting, watering plants, garden maintenance, community building, leading workshops, and promoting health and nutritional awareness
  • If assigned to Athletics Reservation Programs, duties also include professionally interacting with residents and sports participants at city sports facilities and parks, collecting and submitting participant registration and program data
  • If assigned to Zoo, duties include working in animal interaction areas, addressing emergency/accident issues, and working outdoors in various weather conditions
