Job Description

Fresh Air Camps is a well-established nonprofit organization that has been dedicated to providing transformative summer experiences for children since 1877. Located in the scenic Hudson Valley region of New York, Fresh Air Camps operates six residential camp facilities that welcome thousands of children each summer. These camps are designed to offer unique and enriching programming tailored to different age groups, fostering personal growth, leadership development, and a deeper connection to nature. With a mission focused on expanding opportunities and opening new doors for youth from diverse backgrounds, Fresh Air Camps combines outdoor adventures, creative arts, and educational pursuits to cultivate a supportive and vibrant camp community.

The role of Camp Program Director at Fresh Air Camps is a pivotal leadership position responsible for managing day-to-day camper programs across their six summer camps. This is a full-time seasonal position requiring on-site residence from June 5 to August 16, 2025, with semi-private adult housing and all meals provided. Compensation ranges from $3,300 to $3,800 for the summer, reflecting the leadership responsibilities and commitment demanded by this role. Program Directors are essential to the success of camp operations as they supervise a staff of 10 to 15, coordinate and schedule camp activities, and ensure that each camper receives a high-quality, engaging experience throughout the session.

The Fresh Air Fund hires multiple Program Directors to oversee various specialized program areas. These include the Teen Program Director who manages leadership programs for teens aged 13 to 17 at specific camps, encouraging personal development and future goal setting; the Director of Specialists who leads specialist staff and manages camp schedules to ensure exceptional programming; and the CIT (Counselor-in-Training) Director who mentors young counselors preparing to take on future camp leadership roles. Each role requires strong organizational skills, supervisory experience, and a passion for youth development.

Program Directors participate in up to 20 hours of pre-camp training delivered virtually or in person to prepare for the summer. This training supports their ability to lead effectively, manage program logistics, and uphold the camp’s standards of excellence. The ideal candidates will have prior residential camp experience with demonstrated leadership capabilities and a commitment to living onsite for the entire duration of the camp season. Working closely with the Camp Director and other leadership team members, Program Directors contribute to a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment that empowers campers to explore their potential in a natural setting.

Fresh Air Camps prides itself on its long-standing history, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and dedication to forming a caring and energetic camp community. Staff members not only contribute to unforgettable summer experiences for campers but also gain valuable professional development and leadership skills. This opportunity is perfect for individuals who are enthusiastic about youth mentorship, program development, and creating a positive impact through outdoor education.
