Job Description

The City of Huntington Beach community is renowned for its commitment to fostering an excellent quality of life through diverse recreational and educational programs. As a vibrant coastal city, Huntington Beach prides itself on being a welcoming and active community with a strong focus on public health, wellness, and community engagement. The Community & Library Services Department plays a vital role in delivering these initiatives, overseeing a wide range of community-centric programs, including the highly valued aquatics services. The department is dedicated to providing safe, enjoyable, and educational recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities. Among its many offerings, the City Gym and Pool stands out as a central hub for aquatic activities, swimming lessons, and community gatherings. This venue serves as a gathering place where families, athletes, and community members come together to improve their physical health, learn essential water safety skills, and enjoy social interaction in a safe environment.

We are currently seeking a qualified, enthusiastic, and experienced individual to join our team as a Part-Time Program Coordinator (Pool Manager) focused on Aquatics within the Community & Library Services Department. This non-permanent, part-time position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the Huntington Beach community by managing and supporting the City's aquatic programs at the City Gym and Pool. This role is essential in ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations of the pool facility, staff supervision, program coordination, and the delivery of high-quality swimming lessons and certification courses.

The ideal candidate will possess at least three years of directly related aquatics experience and hold current certifications, including American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer or American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, and Water Safety Instructor Certification. In this position, you will be a visible presence on the pool deck, actively enforcing safety policies, pool regulations, and department rules to maintain a secure and welcoming aquatic environment. Your responsibilities will also include tasking and supervising lifeguards and instructors, facilitating swim lessons as needed, and assisting with facility maintenance.

Beyond operational duties, this role requires strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills, with a focus on exceptional customer service and community engagement. You will collaborate closely with the Community & Library Services Coordinator and Supervisor to develop and implement aquatics programs that meet community needs, provide enriching cultural and recreational experiences, and uphold the City's mission. You will also help lead staff training sessions, certification courses, and support community outreach through promotional materials when necessary.

This position requires a commitment of approximately 19 hours per week, with a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends to accommodate program demands. It is important to note that this temporary, part-time role is limited to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period and does not offer city benefits aside from those mandated by law. Enrollment in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) is mandatory, which involves an employee contribution.

Joining our team means contributing to a community dedicated to becoming the best beach city in the world by delivering outstanding aquatics programs that enhance residents' health, safety, and enjoyment of water-based recreation. If you are a motivated, team-oriented individual passionate about aquatics and community service, we encourage you to apply for this rewarding position and make a positive impact at the City Gym and Pool.
