Job Description

The City of Lafayette is a vibrant municipality dedicated to providing high-quality public services and enriching community life through diverse recreational and cultural programs. Serving a growing population, the City is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for residents and visitors alike. The Parks and Recreation Department is an essential division within the City’s government, tasked with delivering a broad spectrum of programs and activities that promote health, wellness, and social engagement for all age groups. Known for its well-maintained parks and specialized community centers, including the McAllister Recreation Center, Lafayette prioritizes enhancing the quality of life by offering accessible recreational opportunities and building strong community connections. The City values innovation, professionalism, and community collaboration in its pursuit of innovative recreation management and outstanding public services.

The Program Coordinator position at the McAllister Recreation Center is a full-time role requiring a 40-hour workweek with variable scheduling that includes regular extended hours, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. This position offers a competitive bi-weekly salary ranging from $2,030.13 to $2,333.18. The individual selected will act as the primary recreation coordinator responsible for planning, implementing, promoting, and supervising the Parks and Recreation Department’s diverse recreation programs at the McAllister Center. This role involves assessing community needs and interests to tailor programs that effectively engage the public, managing facility scheduling, and ensuring smooth operations by opening and closing the center.

The Program Coordinator supervises assigned personnel by conducting interviews, hiring staff, delegating work assignments, evaluating job performance, providing necessary training, and addressing corrective measures when needed. The role demands strong communication skills to coordinate activities across department teams, resolve issues efficiently, and promote recreation programs to the community via public presentations, brochures, flyers, news releases, social media, and updates to the McAllister Center website. Furthermore, the coordinator acts as a liaison between the Department and other recreational service agencies, represents the Department at community events, and assists with organizing special events.

Additional responsibilities include preparing annual reports on recreation activities and assisting with budget preparation by projecting payroll and operational costs and providing recommendations to supervisors. Staying current with trends and developments in the recreation field by attending seminars and workshops is essential for maintaining program quality and innovation. The position requires a highly organized, enthusiastic, and engaging personality, with excellent verbal and written communication abilities. The successful candidate must thrive in a dynamic team environment that includes frequent distractions and interruptions and must enjoy working with children.

This role also emphasizes maintaining professionalism and positive relations with coworkers, other city departments, vendors, regulatory agencies, and the public. The ability to work harmoniously while respecting cultural diversity, ethics, and disabilities is critical. Candidates must be able to meet attendance standards, have a valid driver's license with a demonstrated safe driving record, and be willing to work some extended hours, weekends, and occasionally travel for seminars or programs. The City of Lafayette is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to creating a diverse workforce and inclusive workplace where all employees are valued and respected.
