Job Description

Van Andel Institute (VAI) is a world-class biomedical research institute located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, dedicated to improving human health through innovative scientific discovery and education. Founded in 1996 by the Van Andel family, VAI employs nearly 500 scientists, educators, and support staff who collaborate nationally and internationally to study the origins of cancer, Parkinson's disease, and other major health challenges. The institute's mission emphasizes translating breakthrough research into prevention and treatment strategies. VAI also invests significantly in education by developing inquiry-based learning approaches for K-12 students and operating a rigorous Ph.D. graduate program focused on molecular and cellular biology. The institute fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace culture, emphasizing broad participation and collaboration to drive excellence and innovation in biomedical research and education.

The role of Program and Community Relations Manager for Purple Community at Van Andel Institute is a high-impact leadership position that sits at the intersection of community engagement, fundraising, and cause marketing. Purple Community serves as one of the most visible and community-driven initiatives at VAI, with a goal to mobilize grassroots supporters, inspire philanthropy, and accelerate biomedical discovery and science education. This position requires a dynamic, relationship-driven leader who can build and sustain partnerships across local and national organizations, lead strategic program growth, and execute impactful events to engage diverse communities.

As the Program and Community Relations Manager, you will be instrumental in turning community passion into tangible outcomes that fuel research breakthroughs and advance education programs. Your core responsibilities will include leading outreach and fundraising strategies for Purple Community, expanding partnerships with health and life sciences organizations, and strengthening the initiative’s presence across the region and state. You will also manage and develop the team of Purple Community Coordinators by providing supervision, coaching, and fostering a high-performing, mission-oriented culture. Your ability to cultivate and steward donor relationships and community fundraising efforts will play a key role in sustaining long-term support for VAI’s mission.

Furthermore, you will oversee the planning and execution of events that connect donors, partners, and community members to the impact of VAI’s work. This includes managing logistics, budgets, vendors, and ensuring alignment of events with the institute’s brand and goals. You will also work to enhance the visibility and effectiveness of Purple Community through digital platforms, prospect management systems, and strategic media and partnership engagements.

This role requires 5+ years of related work experience, including at least 2 years in leadership or supervisory positions. Non-profit experience is preferred, along with demonstrated skills in relationship building, fundraising, event management, program strategy, and operational oversight. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required. All full-time employees at Van Andel Institute are eligible for benefits starting on day one, and compensation is commensurate with experience and skill set.

Joining Van Andel Institute offers the chance to be part of a pioneering organization committed to scientific discovery and educational innovation, situated in the vibrant, philanthropic community of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The city provides a unique blend of cosmopolitan culture and small-town warmth, making it an appealing and family-friendly place to live and work.
