The Professional Fee Coder - Analyst II at UCSF plays a crucial role within the Revenue Operations team under the guidance of a Revenue Manager and Associate Director. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive coding support, auditing, and training across designated areas to ensure compliance with billing and coding standards. A key focus of this role is educating physicians and clinical staff on accurate documentation practices to meet coding guidelines effectively. The Analyst II performs detailed reviews of physician documentation, identifying discrepancies, and delivering insightful recommendations for physician education to improve compliance and revenue capture. The incumbent will navigate complex billing environments, understand Medicare Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs), CPT codes, ICD-10, Evaluation and Management (E/M) Documentation Guidelines (1995/1997), Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) edits, state and federal regulations, and payer-specific billing requirements. Additionally, the role requires resolving coding-related denials, assigning appropriate codes based on clinical chart reviews, and identifying process improvements to optimize revenue cycles. Strong organizational skills, communication abilities, and proficiency in database, spreadsheet, and presentation tools are essential. Experience leveraging reporting instruments and dashboards enhances the coder's ability to analyze workflows and present findings. An understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology helps bridge clinical and operational requirements. Job Requirements
- One or more years of coding experience
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
- Experience with CPT, ICD-10, E/M Documentation Guidelines (1995/1997), CCI edits, Medicare LCDs, state and federal regulations, and payer billing requirements
- Working knowledge of healthcare revenue cycle practices
- Proficiency in database, spreadsheet, and presentation software
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Must work onsite in Emeryville office
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training

- Ability to summarize and present reports
Job Duties
- Provide education and training to physicians and clinical staff on documentation to ensure compliance with coding guidelines
- Perform in-depth review of physician documentation and present findings along with recommendations on physician education
- Assign codes based on clinical chart reviews
- Resolve coding issues arising from denials
- Identify areas of improvement in coding and revenue processes
- Communicate complex coding and billing regulations effectively to faculty, management, and staff
- Support revenue operations with auditing and training activities
