Located in Sacramento, CA, the Production Operator II role at the Airgas plant dedicated to acetylene production and filling is a critical position that underlines the company’s commitment to operational excellence and safety. The Production Operator II plays an essential role in the care and filling of gas products into liquid, medical, and high-pressure gas cylinders in full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and Airgas’s own stringent standards. This role is vital in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of gas production processes, specifically dealing with industrial gas mixes, cryogenic gases, and medical gas products. Operators are expected to conduct inspections and safety checks, evaluate product purity, and prepare cylinders for filling, always maintaining an acute awareness of safety protocols related to handling hazardous materials.
Beyond technical responsibilities, the role encompasses operating forklifts and other warehouse equipment, documenting compliance with regulatory standards such as DOT, FDA, and OSHA, and maintaining clean and orderly plant conditions. Job Requirements
- HS diploma or equivalent
- Ability to complete training and achieve certifications for filling all cryogenic liquids and pure industrial gases
- Ability to complete FDA, Food Grade, and CGMP Training and achieve certifications
- Minimum of 1 year of prior experience in related manufacturing operation
- Must be able to operate forklift and maintain appropriate forklift certifications
Job Qualifications
- Ability to complete training and achieve certifications for filling all cryogenic liquids and pure industrial gases
- Ability to complete FDA, Food Grade, and CGMP Training and achieve certifications
- HS diploma or equivalent preferred
- Minimum of 1 year of prior experience in related manufacturing operation
- filling or loading experience preferred
- Strong background in gas, welding, and safety supply industry or chemical industry preferred
- Must be able to operate forklift and maintain appropriate forklift certifications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to read and comprehend material safety data sheets
- Must be able to work with a wide variety of people with different personalities and backgrounds
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and under some pressure to meet deadlines
- Strong level of attention to detail
- Ability to add, subtracts, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages
- Ability to safely operate a forklift
Job Duties
- Supporting various operations in the plant, including monitoring equipment to fill industrial gas mixes, cryogenic gases, and medical gas products, and contributing to both level 1 and 2 activities
- Inspects cylinders prior to filling, following standard procedures as required by government, Airgas, and distributor standards
- Conducts a variety of safety checks per procedures, such as odor tests and checking caps and valves
- Evaluates products for purity and correct mixtures
- Manages the care of high-pressure, medical, and liquid cylinders
- Prepares high-pressure cylinders and cryogenic vessels for filling
- Attaches to the manifold and ensures the removal of all possible contaminants
- Fills cylinders by pressure and weight, per regulations and standards
- Assists with the loading and unloading of cylinders on and off pallets and tractor trailers
- Operates a forklift, pallet jack, and other warehouse equipment
- Maintains accurate records to DOT, FDA, OSHA, and Airgas standards
- Completes quality control sheets as required
- Is knowledgeable of safety protocols regarding various gases, sizes, and contents of cylinders by reading and interpreting cylinder labels and the color-coding of tanks
- Accurately labels cylinders
- Alignment with all government and company standards for safely handling hazardous materials/cylinder gases
- Maintains a neat, clean, and orderly plant appearance
- Supports any reasonable work request that falls within the qualifications but not specifically described
