Job Description
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a renowned public research university known for its commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and community engagement. As part of its extensive campus services, the university operates a dynamic food service environment within Union South, a vibrant hub for students, faculty, and guests. Union South is recognized not only for its modern facilities and welcoming atmosphere but also for hosting an award-winning culinary team dedicated to providing exceptional food experiences. The dining services here emphasize quality, sustainability, and community connection, making it a premier food venue on campus and a place where culinary arts thrive.
The role of Cook at Union South offers an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about culinary production and eager to grow their careers in a supportive, team-oriented setting. Under the supervision of the Food Service Supervisor and the Sous Chef, the cook plays a critical role in preparing and cooking a diverse array of meals catering to breakfast, lunch, dinner, and other departmental needs. The position focuses on safe and efficient food production, adhering strictly to federal, state, and local food safety regulations. This ensures the delivery of high-quality food products that meet the standards of a national award-winning team.
This role is perfect for individuals who enjoy working in a fast-paced culinary environment and value collaboration and mentorship. Working alongside full-time food service professionals and part-time students, the cook helps maintain a smooth operational flow while contributing to the training and development of student workers. This aspect of the job adds a rewarding educational dimension, as the cook imparts skills and procedures that help students grow their culinary expertise.
Physical endurance is an important component of the role, as the cook must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and stand for extended periods. The work environment varies from cold storage areas to hot kitchen spaces, requiring adaptability and resilience. The position primarily operates within the beautiful Union South building, with work hours initially scheduled from Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with flexibility as business needs change.
Compensation for this regular, university staff position starts at $20.50 per hour, complemented by an extensive benefits package. Employees enjoy generous paid time off, competitively priced health, dental, vision, and life insurance, tax-advantaged savings plans, and participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension fund. This comprehensive offering supports both personal well-being and financial security, making employment here not only a job but a valuable career path.
If you are seeking a stable work environment where learning and teamwork are paramount, and you want to be part of a nationally recognized food service team, this cook position at University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Union South is an exceptional choice. Emphasizing safety, quality, collaboration, and development, this role offers a solid foundation for culinary professionals at any stage of their career journey.
