The Cook position within the Union South Kitchen presents an exceptional opportunity for individuals interested in developing or advancing their culinary careers in a supportive and stable work environment. Reporting directly to the Food Service Supervisor and Sous Chef, the successful candidate will play an essential role in preparing and cooking a variety of meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, catering both to daily operations and special department needs. This position emphasizes food safety and efficient food production while fostering a collaborative team atmosphere. Working alongside full-time food service professionals and part-time student employees, the Cook will contribute to ensuring that Union South remains the premier food venue at the University of Wisconsin.
Employees in this role will be actively engaged in maintaining high standards of food preparation and customer service, gaining valuable experience as part of a nationally award-winning culinary team. The position encourages the development of mentoring skills as it involves training and guiding student workers to meet departmental goals. Physical demands such as lifting, standing for extended periods, and working in diverse temperature environments are part of the typical workday. The work schedule begins with Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with possible adjustments based on business needs.

Job Duties
- perform routine and non-routine food preparation activities including cook to order and specialty foods
- adhere to federal, state, campus, and local food safety regulations, policies, and procedures
- clean, inspect, and maintain kitchen equipment and work areas
- greet customers, answer questions, and provide information regarding food preparation and associated activities
- train and guide student workers
