This position is for a Product Development Scientist I in the Research & Development segment based in Missouri City, TX. Rich Products Corporation seeks a dedicated individual to join their growing R&D team in the desserts category. The role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to new product development, product maintenance, and improvement initiatives. The candidate will collaborate cross-functionally with departments such as Marketing, Procurement, Engineering, QA, and Operations to ensure the successful development, commercialization, and cost reduction of products. Responsibilities include preparing prototype products in research and pilot labs, coordinating projects and experiments, selecting raw materials, and conducting shelf life and storage studies. This role requires hands-on operation and maintenance of lab equipment, performing statistical analyses, and demonstrating products to both internal staff and customers.

The position demands the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, strong verbal and written communication skills, and a broad knowledge of food science principles including biochemistry, microbiology, and nutrition. Rich's emphasizes safety in the work environment, requiring adherence to protocols in laboratories where potential exposure to food ingredients, chemicals, and cleaning agents can occur. Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform activities like bending, stooping, and climbing. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Engineering or a related field
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs safely
  • Stand for 6 or more hours with opportunities for sitting
  • Regular bending, stooping, crouching, and reaching
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at various heights including occasional climbing
  • Ability to push, pull, and maneuver carts and heavy equipment with mechanical aids
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills for handling small components
  • Ability to use hand tools and laboratory/production equipment safely and effectively
  • Sensory ability to distinguish differences in ingredients by taste, smell, touch, and visual inspection
  • Adherence to all safety protocols including lifting techniques and ergonomic practices
  • Willingness to work in laboratory environments with possible exposure to chemicals and food ingredients
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills in a cross-functional team environment

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Engineering or related field
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematics including statistics and practical applications
  • Broad understanding of food science disciplines such as biochemistry, microbiology, and nutrition
  • Ability to apply technical standards, principles, theories, and techniques
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment

Job Duties

  • Prepare prototype products using research and pilot lab equipment
  • Coordinate routine assignments and small projects, assisting in defining objectives and conducting experiments
  • Interface with internal departments such as Marketing, Procurement, Engineering, QA, and Operations to meet project milestones
  • Select and evaluate raw materials for experiments
  • Operate and maintain pilot and research lab equipment
  • Design and conduct shelf life and storage studies including product and package performance evaluations
  • Demonstrate new and existing products to staff and customers
  • Perform basic measurements and statistical analysis
  • Present experiment results and recommendations internally and externally
  • Order materials for producing and evaluating prototypes
  • Develop solutions to routine technical problems
  • Maintain accurate records and laboratory notebooks
  • Prepare and document plant validation trials according to protocol
  • Ensure and maintain a sanitary, safe, and orderly work environment
