Job Description
UC Davis Health is a renowned academic health system and a prominent component of the University of California, Davis. It is dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care, advancing groundbreaking medical research, and providing distinguished education and training for future healthcare professionals. UC Davis Health includes multiple specialized hospitals, outpatient clinics, and research facilities, serving diverse communities across Northern California. The institution is committed to fostering an inclusive and innovative environment that supports the wellbeing of its patients, staff, and visitors.
The Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Department at UC Davis Health plays a vital role in delivering high-quality food services and clinical nutrition support to patients, staff, and visitors across the health system. The department operates multiple food service locations including the Pavilion Kitchen and Café, ACC Café, and the Medical Education Building Scrubs East Café. These dynamic and fast-paced environments provide diverse opportunities for food service team members to engage in various aspects of food production, patient care, retail service, and catering.
The Medical Center Food Service Worker (PRN) position at UC Davis Health is a full-time, career staff role with a salary range of $24.52 to $30.49 hourly. This role is 100% on-site and requires the incumbent to perform assigned duties across various FNS locations and within other health campus facilities. The ideal candidate will have the capacity to work flexibly in multiple areas such as trayline patient services, food delivery or hosting, diet kitchen, dish and pot rooms, retail serving and cashiering, barista duties, stocking, food production including issue rooms, and cold or hot food preparation. Catering duties including food delivery, serving, event food assembling, and preparation may also be assigned.
This versatile role demands a strong knowledge of sanitation and food safety standards essential to maintaining a safe and healthy food environment. The incumbent will be responsible for effective communication with patient care units, visitors, and colleagues, emphasizing outstanding customer service and fostering an atmosphere where customers and co-workers feel valued and respected. A critical aspect of the role is working compassionately in patient environments, often caring for very sick patients, and maintaining the quality and quantity of work while potentially working independently without direct supervision.
UC Davis Health emphasizes safety, sanitation, and quality control as key priorities, with the Medical Center Food Service Worker contributing approximately 80% of their time to daily job duties, 15% toward safety and sanitation responsibilities, and 5% toward quality control. Staff work in a union-represented environment under the SX-Service Workers collective bargaining agreement and benefit from an extensive array of benefits. The position offers opportunities for personal and professional growth, including access to continuing education allowances, reimbursement programs, wellness resources, and comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans.
Working at UC Davis Health means joining a diverse and inclusive workplace where innovation, collaboration, and respect are fostered. The organization is committed to equal employment opportunities and values the unique perspectives and backgrounds of its employees. As part of this commitment, applicants are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every qualification listed, supporting a culture of belonging and opportunity. The role requires physical stamina including standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, and other activities, along with a readiness to work variable shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays across different units and buildings to meet operational needs.
This role requires compliance with UC policies related to background checks, drug screening, mandatory reporting responsibilities, and misconduct disclosures. Join UC Davis Health in this critical food service position to make a meaningful impact on patient nutrition and visitor satisfaction while advancing your career within a respected academic health system.
