Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Principal/Senior Principal Engineer specializing in Electronics - Communications Integration to join their team based onsite in Palmdale, California. This critical role involves leading the hands-on integration and testing of advanced communications equipment in a lab environment, focusing on configuring and validating next-generation communication methods and hardware for complex test scenarios. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing detailed lab test procedures and validation plans, which include thorough signal chain analysis, link budgets, interference checks, and establishing precise pass/fail criteria. Operating and configuring sophisticated RF and network testbeds and emulators—including channel emulators, attenuators, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and network simulators—will be vital to replicating operational environments necessary for accurate equipment validation. This engineer will troubleshoot intricate hardware and software integration challenges spanning RF front ends, digital basebands, modem stacks, and network interfaces, ensuring seamless communication subsystem performance.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining configuration management and lab readiness by preserving test fixtures, calibration records, test scripts, version control of test artifacts, and generating comprehensive technical reports for stakeholders. The role requires active collaboration with the Integrated Communications Systems team to align testing strategies with system goals. The position demands a pioneering, self-starting engineer comfortable working within an Integrated Product Team construct, capable of independently managing test environments and producing reliable data outputs. Up to 25% travel may be required, emphasizing the dynamic and collaborative nature of the role across various operational sites or partner locations.

Candidates for this position must hold an active U.S. Government Top Secret Security Clearance at the start, with the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance as required by company needs. Salary ranges for this role vary from $114,000 to $171,000 for Principal Engineers and $142,200 to $213,400 for Senior Principal Engineers, with factors such as education, experience, and skills influencing the final offer. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline required
  • 5 or more years of relevant engineering experience for Principal Engineer level
  • 8 or more years of relevant engineering experience for Senior Principal Engineer level
  • Practical RF experience with HF and UHF systems and Beyond Line Of Sight technologies
  • Proficiency with spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, signal generators and RF channel emulators
  • Experience with scripting automated test procedures
  • Experience in integration of communications, payloads or avionics electronic subsystems
  • Active U.S. Government Top Secret Security Clearance required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program clearance

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline and 5 years of related engineering experience or a Master's degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of related engineering experience or a PhD in a STEM discipline and 1 year of related engineering experience
  • Practical RF experience covering HF and UHF systems and familiarity with Beyond Line Of Sight technologies including satcom, troposcatter or similar
  • Proficiency with test equipment including spectrum, logic, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, signal generators and RF channel emulators
  • Experience scripting automated tests using Python, MATLAB or similar
  • Experience in technical integration of communications, payloads or avionics electronic subsystems
  • An active U.S. Government Top Secret Security Clearance is required to apply and to start the role, with the ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access within a reasonable amount of time
  • Current applicable Special Access Program clearance is preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Communications Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field is preferred

Job Duties

  • Lead hands on integration and test of communications equipment in a lab environment, configuring and validating advanced communications methods and hardware for planned test scenarios
  • Develop, execute and document lab test procedures and validation plans including signal chaining, link budgets, interference checks and pass/fail criteria and capture test results and anomalies
  • Configure and operate RF and network testbeds/emulators including channel emulators, attenuators, spectrum analyzers, signal generators and protocol/network simulators to reproduce operational environments
  • Troubleshoot hardware/software integration issues across RF front end, digital baseband, modem stacks and network interfaces
  • Support configuration management and lab readiness: maintain test fixtures, instrumentation calibration records, test scripts, version control for test artifacts and produce concise technical reports for stakeholders
  • Integrate with the Integrated Communications Systems team
  • Travel up to 25 percent may be required
