Job Description

Raytheon Technologies Corporation (RTX) is the world largest aerospace and defense company known for uniting more than 185,000 skilled professionals dedicated to solving the world’s most complex challenges. With over a century of engineering excellence and cutting-edge technology, Raytheon delivers advanced solutions that protect and connect people globally. The company operates through three market-leading businesses and is renowned for its robust research and development capabilities, contributing to innovations that secure the future of aerospace and defense. Based in Tucson, Arizona, Raytheon enhances national security and supports allied forces by providing missile systems and defense technologies that are critical for modern defense strategies.

This Principal Software Security Engineer position is a unique opportunity within the Software Security Sensors and Effectors (S3E) Department at Raytheon Tucson. The role is onsite and focused on the design, development, integration, and testing of real-time missile system software with an emphasis on security software implementations. The candidate will engage in embedded software development, primarily using C and C++, and apply system security principles essential for deployed missile systems. This role demands a thorough understanding of real-time software design and an ability to evaluate system security impacts on performance. The engineer will collaborate closely with systems security engineering teams to define and implement security requirements that meet rigorous government standards and help protect critical defense systems.

Candidates will work in a dynamic development environment leveraging shared capabilities and interfacing with customer communities to review technical designs and verify system maturity. The position requires proficiency in developing embedded software on platforms such as Xilinx UltraScale+ MPSoC and related embedded processors, as well as experience with embedded operating systems like VxWorks and Embedded Linux. Embedded software security experience is critical, and familiarity with cryptography, secure boot concepts, and low-level driver interfaces is highly desired. Additionally, applicants must either hold or be eligible to obtain an interim DoD Secret security clearance, a requirement for contributing to classified defense projects.

Raytheon offers a competitive salary range from $107,500 to $204,500, reflecting various levels of expertise and responsibilities. Alongside financial compensation, Raytheon provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes healthcare, retirement plans, paid time off, parental leave, and professional development opportunities. Tucson is recognized as one of America’s best small cities, offering a warm climate with over 310 sunny days per year, a vibrant desert landscape, and a friendly community atmosphere, which makes it an excellent location for working and living.

This role is vital for advancing Raytheon’s mission to deliver secure and reliable missile defense systems that protect the United States and its allies. It’s an exciting chance for seasoned engineers passionate about real-time embedded systems, software security, and defense technology to contribute to national security while enjoying a robust career path in an industry-leading company.
