Job Description
Raytheon Technologies is a global aerospace and defense company known for its rich history of innovation and engineering excellence. With over a century of experience, Raytheon specializes in delivering cutting-edge technology solutions to help safeguard the nation and its allies. Headquartered in the United States, Raytheon focuses on developing advanced defense and aerospace systems that empower security and technological superiority. The company operates with a strong commitment to its core values of safety, trust, respect, accountability, collaboration, and innovation, creating a work environment that encourages professional growth and meaningful contributions to national security.
The Principal Propellant Chemist position, based in Tucson, Arizona, offers a unique and impactful opportunity within Raytheon's Materials Engineering Department. This role is critical in supporting the Mechanical Products Team by focusing on chemical analysis and the application of non-metal materials such as adhesives, polymers, tapes, and composites. The role is fully onsite, requiring a highly skilled chemist to engage with energetic suppliers, conduct laboratory analyses, and perform hands-on testing to ensure material performance and quality throughout all phases of the product lifecycle—from design to production.
This position requires working with a variety of advanced laboratory instruments including FTIR, SEM-EDS, GC-MS, LC, NMR, TGA, DSC, and DMA to analyze propellant chemistry and materials characterization. The candidate will have responsibilities spanning from troubleshooting and supporting supplier issues to method and test plan development, leading characterization projects, and documenting and communicating analytical results. Due to the sensitive nature of the work, U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance are mandatory. The chemist will collaborate closely with internal engineers, subject matter experts, management, and external suppliers, ensuring that all material testing aligns with specifications and supports program success.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in chemistry with significant experience using standard laboratory equipment and instrumental analysis techniques. Prior experience in propellant chemistry, polymer science, and materials testing is essential. Raytheon values innovation and technical excellence, and this role provides an excellent environment for growth in a mission-driven company with a strong emphasis on security and quality.
The salary range for this role is $107,500 to $204,500 USD, reflecting the level of expertise and responsibility required. Employees in this position may be eligible for a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, 401(k) matching, flexible spending accounts, paid time off, and more. Raytheon fosters an inclusive workplace and offers equal employment opportunities for all qualified individuals regardless of race, gender, or veteran status. Overall, this position is perfect for a dedicated chemist seeking to contribute to national defense through advanced materials science and propellant chemistry at a respected industry leader.
