The role of Prepared Foods Team Leader at Whole Foods Market involves providing leadership and direction to the Prepared Foods team. This is a full-time position with an hourly wage range of $22.40 to $40.40, commensurate with experience. The role requires oversight of daily operations including managing profitability, expense control, buying, merchandising, labor management, regulatory compliance, and handling special projects as assigned. The Team Leader is responsible for hiring, developing, and managing team members through performance evaluations and corrective measures. In addition to excellent team management, this position requires strong customer service skills to maintain a positive company image. Prepared Foods Team Leaders interact with customers and team members regularly, ensuring all operations follow Whole Foods Market’s Standard Operating Procedures and health and safety regulations, including food safety standards.
This leadership role demands advanced knowledge of product assortment, pricing, buying, merchandising, and inventory management within the Prepared Foods department. Candidates are expected to have robust interpersonal and motivational skills, capable of fostering an environment of teamwork, mutual respect, and high morale. The role also entails monitoring sales goals, labor targets, and purchasing budgets while maintaining effective relationships with vendors and department leaders. Prepared Foods Team Leaders must stay informed about competitor activity and industry trends to maintain competitive and innovative retail execution.
A significant aspect of the position is commitment to food safety, requiring certification within six months if not currently held. The role involves supervisory duties including conducting hiring and separation decisions, mentoring, training, and counseling team members to minimize turnover and build a strong team. Physical requirements include ability to lift up to 50 pounds, standing and walking for extended periods, and regular use of tools like knives and electric pallet jacks. Candidates must be flexible to work varied schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Job Requirements
- 24 plus months retail experience including 12 plus months of team leadership experience
- ability to lift 50 pounds
- standing and walking 6 to 8 hours during an 8-hour shift
- ability to perform hand use motions including grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling
- capability to bend, twist, squat and reach
- exposure to FDA approved cleaning chemicals
- ability to work in temperatures below freezing, refrigeration range, and above 90 degrees Fahrenheit
- ability to work in wet and dry conditions
- willingness to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
- ability to use tools and equipment including knives, box cutters, electric pallet jacks, and heavy machinery
- ability to use ladders
Job Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of products, buying, pricing, merchandising, and inventory management
- food safety certification or commitment to obtain within 6 months
- excellent interpersonal, motivational, team building, and customer relationship skills
- ability to teach others in a positive and constructive manner
- advanced knowledge of regulatory and safety policies and procedures
- proficient mathematical skills for assessing financial performance, monitoring profitability, and managing inventory
- demonstrated decision-making ability, leadership skills, and ability to prioritize and delegate
- proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, and operations-related applications
