NARA Northwest is a reputable nonprofit organization dedicated to providing education, physical and mental health services, and substance abuse treatment that are culturally appropriate to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and the broader community in need. Operating with a staff of over 450 employees, NARA NW delivers a wide range of services including medical and dental care, addiction treatment, housing assistance, and enrichment initiatives. The organization is deeply committed to making a meaningful, positive impact on the lives of the people it serves, with a special focus on Native American and Alaska Native populations. NARA NW prides itself on fostering a supportive and respectful work environment where every team member is valued, whether they are passionate about healthcare, behavioral health, education, or social services.
The Prep Cook/Dishwasher position at NARA NW is based at its Adult Residential facility located at 17645 NW Saint Helens Hwy, Portland, OR. This in-person role is scheduled from Sunday to Thursday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, offering an hourly wage range of $21.00 to $23.10. It is a non-exempt position that emphasizes teamwork and a commitment to upholding the organization’s high standards of cleanliness and food safety. This role is particularly suited for motivated individuals looking to contribute to a mission-driven organization and who aspire to progress within the culinary department, with this role serving as a pathway toward a Cook position.
In this role, the primary responsibility is handling dishwashing duties to ensure all dishes and kitchen equipment meet cleanliness standards. Once these duties are completed, the prep cook assists with food preparation and may also help serve cafeteria-style meals to up to 70 clients. Beyond cleaning and food prep, the role involves maintaining kitchen inventory and supplies, attending facility meetings, and participating in training classes. The successful candidate will embody professionalism, respect, and collaboration, ensuring a positive environment for clients and team members.
NARA NW’s mission is deeply embedded in the community it serves, and this position supports that mission by ensuring the kitchen operates smoothly and safely, contributing to the overall wellbeing of clients who rely on the services. The company also enforces a strict sobriety and drug-free workplace policy in line with its commitment to health and wellness, and preference is given to qualified Native Americans in hiring, reflecting the organization’s dedication to cultural relevance and respect.
The organization offers competitive benefits, including 14 paid holidays, medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid sick and vacation time, life insurance, disability coverage, and retirement plans. Employees working 20 hours or more become eligible for these benefits starting the first of the month following their hire date. NARA NW fosters a workplace culture that values mutual respect, cultural sensitivity, and dedication to service, making it an excellent employer for individuals who are passionate about social impact, community health, and culinary arts within a social services framework.
