The role of a Prep Cook, also referred to as Pret Hot Chef, is a crucial position within Pret A Manger’s kitchen operations. This position involves working collaboratively as part of a team to ensure the preparation, presentation, and serving of hot food meets the brand’s rigorous standards. The Prep Cook focuses on maintaining excellent food quality and availability while upholding the company’s health and safety protocols. This role includes responsibilities such as coaching and training team members in hot food preparation, maintaining cleanliness and kitchen safety, adhering to equipment maintenance schedules, and actively contributing to sales growth through effective product launch management and stock control. Working as a Prep Cook at Pret offers a full-time employment status with an hourly wage of $17 plus tips, complemented by a competitive weekly Mystery Shopper bonus plan that can add up to an additional dollar per hour.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • at least 1 year of hot chef or kitchen experience
  • valid NYC Food Handlers Card preferred
  • ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects up to 50 pounds
  • ability to bend, reach overhead, squat, kneel, and go up and down stairs as needed
  • ability to safely maneuver through tight or compact spaces
  • ability to operate restaurant equipment and handle kitchen tools with dexterity
  • ability to work in varying temperature environments including near open flames and occasional outdoor conditions
  • ability to maintain close, distance, and peripheral vision
  • excellent communication skills
  • ability to stay alert and maintain safe operations

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Coach and train team members and team member stars on hot food preparation and standards
  • liaise with the management team to ensure all hot food training is planned and carried out appropriately
  • conduct hot food team briefs and attend relevant meetings, courses, and conferences
  • ensure all hot food training materials are available and up to date
  • follow Pret’s dress code and be immaculately presented in the correct Hot Chef uniform
  • ensure all hot food is prepared and displayed according to Pret’s planograms and standards
  • maintain high quality and appropriate availability of hot food throughout the day
  • manage new hot food product launches effectively and on time
  • ensure hot food is cooked and held at correct temperatures, with accurate and timely recording
  • follow hot food production setting standards and production principles using the hot food plan
  • adhere to all kitchen health and safety and food safety standards in accordance with the law and Pret policies
  • take responsibility for the health and safety of yourself, your team, and customers
  • complete all required training and follow Pret’s safety processes at all times
  • immediately report any concerns about standards or processes to your manager
  • ensure all hot food equipment is prepared and set up at the start of each day
  • test, clean, and maintain hot food equipment according to Pret standards
  • report any equipment maintenance issues to a manager
  • train team members to use hot food equipment effectively and efficiently
  • communicate with AMK/AMF and organize fresh hot food sampling (Joy of Pret)
  • be aware of hot food sales performance within your shop
  • ensure sufficient stock of hot food ingredients, packaging, and smallwares
