Job Description

Beacon, formerly known as VTC Enterprises/LOVARC, has been a dedicated advocate and support system for adults with developmental disabilities since its establishment in 1962. As a reputable nonprofit organization based in Santa Maria, Beacon is committed to providing quality services and programs that enhance the lives of individuals with developmental challenges. The organization prides itself on fostering an inclusive environment that promotes independence, dignity, and community integration for its clients. Beacon operates with a mission-centered approach, emphasizing compassion, respect, and excellence in all aspects of its service delivery. For more information, visit their website at www.vtc-sm.org.

The Food Preparation Worker position at Beacon plays a crucial role in supporting the organization's Adult Services Contract (ASC) program by assisting the ASC Contract Manager with various food preparation tasks. This full-time role requires a commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient kitchen environment while handling a variety of cooking duties as they arise. The position operates Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with some weekend hours requiring flexibility. The starting pay rate is $18.00 per hour, reflecting the organization's commitment to fairly compensating its workforce.

In this role, the Food Preparation Worker follows detailed instructions from the Cooking Crew Supervisor to ensure the successful preparation and delivery of meals. Responsibilities include accurately labeling and dating ingredients, organizing pantry and refrigeration areas, sanitizing workspaces and kitchen equipment, and preparing a range of ingredients and dishes such as salads, entrees, and more. The worker must be adept at handling various food items, including fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, and shellfish, ensuring they are properly washed, cut, peeled, or ground as required.

The position requires attention to detail in managing food storage, maintaining inventory records, and updating supervisors when supplies are low or when equipment malfunctions occur. Compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations is paramount to protect the health and well-being of both employees and those served by the organization. Additionally, the Food Preparation Worker is entrusted with delivering food to juvenile hall facilities per contractual specifications, underscoring the importance of reliability and punctuality in the role.

On occasions when the Cooking Crew Supervisor is absent, the Food Preparation Worker may be called upon to perform supervisory duties, demonstrating leadership and adaptability. Similarly, covering duties for the Cook or Cafe Trainee Supervisor during breaks or absences highlights the flexible nature of this position and the expectation for multitasking within a fast-paced environment. This dynamic work setting is ideal for individuals who thrive under changing demands and take pride in contributing to a meaningful cause.

Overall, this role offers an opportunity to be part of a supportive team that values collaboration, community service, and personal growth. Beacon supports its employees through various benefits, including paid holidays, vacation, family leave, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401-K retirement plan, and access to an Employment Assistance Program (EAP). The organization is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, welcoming qualified applicants from diverse backgrounds to join its mission-driven workforce.
