Job Description
Equator Coffees is a pioneering coffee company established in 1995 by founders Helen Russell and Brooke McDonnell in Marin County, California. Starting from a humble garage, the company has grown into a respected retail and wholesale coffee roaster and coffee farm owner with twelve retail cafes across California, including locations in Marin County, San Francisco, Oakland, and Los Angeles. Equator Coffees is renowned for its commitment to sustainable and fair trade coffee practices, boasting over 30 years of expertise in green coffee sourcing and artisanal roasting techniques. This women-owned and LGBTQ-founded company stands out as an industry leader, being the first California coffee roaster to achieve B Corporation certification. Equator Coffees has made a significant impact by partnering with Michelin-starred chefs, specialty grocers, and tech campuses, maintaining progressive sourcing and roasting standards and sustainable business values.
The position of Prep Cook at Equator Coffees plays an integral role in supporting the daily operations of the company's cafes. This non-exempt role reports directly to the Café General Manager and focuses on the preparation and quality of food items served. The Prep Cook is responsible for ensuring that all food is prepared with consistency, quality, and care, adhering strictly to food safety standards and standardized recipes. This position requires a strong commitment to maintaining an organized, efficient, and clean kitchen environment. The Prep Cook works to uphold the exceptional quality standards for which Equator Coffees is known, supporting the overall guest experience through precise food preparation and presentation. In cafes without full kitchen facilities, the Prep Cook prepares basic recipes using established culinary guides, showcasing flexibility and adaptability in fulfilling kitchen duties. In locations where the Prep Cook is the sole back-of-house team member, the position expands to include food running, detailed cleaning tasks, and general operational support to ensure smooth cafe functioning.
Candidates for this role should value teamwork, demonstrate a hospitable attitude, and have the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The Prep Cook at Equator Coffees will engage in a variety of tasks such as prepping cold and hot food items, assembling dishes to specification, producing high-quality food presentations, and maintaining a clean and safe kitchen workspace. Physical requirements include the ability to stand for extended periods, handle food safely, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. This role demands a current state-issued Food Handler Card and a minimum age of 16. Equator Coffees offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience and provides a comprehensive benefits package including health and wellness programs, paid time off, and opportunities for ongoing coffee education. The company fosters an inclusive and equitable workplace culture, supporting all employees with equal opportunity and respect regardless of background or identity.
